My butt hurts.
To be more specific, my piriformis muscle is smothering my sciatic nerve causing a stabby feeling in my left butt-cheek.

Last night while my massage therapist dug her fingers into the muscle she nonchalantly announced, "Your piriformis is so tight I could play 'Sweet Child of Mine' on it!" It was an excruciatingly painful hour but I was finally able to sleep through the night since it first flared up. Unfortunately after getting in there and working on it she also informed me that I'd probably experience another flare-up and that I'd probably need to see her a few more times. Apparently there is no magical "fix" to get this to go away, instead I have an artillery of exercises, a tennis ball, and various other torture devices to help endure its 'visit.'
Then there's the weather, f*ck this winter. This is my third winter living back in the north and over the last week I have officially hit my breaking point. The snow, the ice, the cold, the wind; rinse, repeat. Every run lately has been like an arctic obstacle course of suck.
Can I please get a reprieve from the figurative and literal pain in my ass that is this relentless weather and my injury-prone body? Eight more weeks until the marathon, 22 more days until the first day of Spring. I can do this, I can endure this, I can do this, I can endure this, I can do this...
Anyone else feeling stabby lately?

Try a lacrosse ball. Much better than a tennis ball. $3 at Dicks.
I hear ya on the f*ck winter declarations. I was so spoiled by an amazing run yesterday and now we're getting hammered with another winter storm. I'm over it too.
Take care of that ass, girl. No more injuries!
Ugh, my a$$ hurts too. I don't know if it's a viable option for you, but a couple of yoga classes a week seems to help me. Hope you're feeling better soon!
you could also pick up the triggerpoint therapy pack - has a hard ball to sit on to relieve butt pain.
and while traffic and housing prices are awful out here, CA is dabomb.com for weather lol
Some of my exciting stretches/exercises have Piriformis in their description if you want to join in the fun.....
I've been told my ass is contagious - apparently it's a nationwide epidemic!
Aw shucks! Keep going back to your therapist and do the exercises.
I am beyond over winter. Ran outside and it was great yesterday ( a little icy here and there, and some crater size puddles on other streets), woke up today to 6 inches of slush and snow on my car and on the roads. I'm ready for my outdoor runs to not be auditions for ice skating obstacle course finals.
As for the pain in the rear, I have had it before but not quite like you are talking about. Sorry it's a pain in the ass, literally. Hope the tennis ball and massages help! Hey, tell your man you need him to massage your ass, I am sure he will gladly oblige.
I feel stabby all the time about various things :)
NYC winter doesn't really bother me bc for the most part there isn't snow and ice and I don't mind the cold and hate the heat a lot more. I do empathize with you though because I know when I visit home how sucky it is to run in that garbage.
You can do it!!
I went through this! stand up at work, it helped me a ton.
I echo the lacrosse ball. All my calf/shin problems solved. Much cheaper than a trigger point system, too!
So done with this weather too!! I think it's been the worst in a few years.
Really over it after I wiped out on the ice on the last turn of my 13 miler this weekend.
Try a Chiropractor! If it keeps returning, it's more than just a muscle thing. Could be your SI joint. Without examining you I would just be guessing but...
Give one a try, make sure they are 'sports oriented' though. Less likely to want you coming back, over and over and over. I never have to see patients more than a few visits before their symptoms clear up.
Ok, you should have a "Get out of Injury Free" card for at least the next 5 years to make up for the stress fracture saga you had to enure in 2011. So sorry you are dealing with this. I hope you have a very speedy recovery and that spring time comes SOON to Michigan!! :-)
Preach, gurl. Preach. I am SO over this winter. It's been in the teens every morning for my runs, and I am OVER it. Sigh.
That is crazy, because I just got a massage and it was so incredibly painful because my muscles were so tight. However, I feel much better now... but that was a very painful hour! Although, I did thoroughly enjoy the heated bed... mmm :)
Sorry about your butt pain! Hope you get better asap!

Piriformis issues are the worst! No, stress fractures are the worst, but piriformis problems really suck. I had a similar issue last year and saw a chiropractor and got regular massages. Massages that hurt so bad I wanted to cry, but it helped. Hang in there!
I agree with Anna, massages in combination with proper stretching and strengthening exercises can offer a great deal of help for Piriformis sufferers.
