Sidelined by Sunburn

Preface: I am an idiot.

Sunday afternoon I started a project that took me outside for just over an hour on a beautiful cloudless sunny day forgetting one VERY important thing...

FML.
(Please disregard tramp stamp, teenagers make bad decisions.)

If you guessed sunscreen, you'd be correct.

It's been two days and my back continues to be just as angry, painful, and red. I have been using aloe, burn relief spray with Lidocaine, aspirin, etc., and nothing is really helping. As if this weren't bad enough all on it's own, I haven't been able to run because of it either. When it hurts to sit still and not move a muscle, I cringe at the thought of what running would feel like.

Have I mentioned I am an idiot? Yes, I'm aware that I'm a green-eyed, freckle-faced, pasty Irish redhead that should know better. I'm usually so good about slathering on the spf that I can't even remember the last time I got a sunburn like this! It's been years! Ugh!

So in case you needed the reminder, don't forget your sunscreen; sunburns are painful and skin cancer is NOT sexy. :-/

As a fellow fair-skinned burn victim, I've done this more times than I can count.

One thing that worked for me better than any other the year I burned so severely it bordered on sun-poisoining- vinegar.

It doesn't smell great, but soak a washcloth or small hand towel in and ice bath and vinegar solution, then lay it across your back. It was the ONLY think that gave me relief that year. Hope you heal soon!

I have heard that using aloe actually traps the heat in and causes more pain. Last summer I feel asleep on the beach and burned the backs of my legs like crazy - I took a few baking soda baths and they really helped. Feel better soon!

Yikes! I've had "get better sunscreen for running" on my to-do list for weeks, but after cringing at that picture, it's moving to number one. Sorry you're so uncomfortable, hope the burn feels better soon!

omg that horrible.
put lots of Aloe on it.

Hope it clears up!

Wow, that looks really painful. I'm a fellow half irish fair skinned person, and I have to apply sunscreen if I'm out in the sun for any longer than probably 20 minutes or so. I'm found that aloe seems to help minimize the pain, and it helps keep the skin from peeling. It also soothes the pain.

One thing I'm also realizing is that as you get older, the tans you got over the years start to become more permanent, so I try to be even more vigilant about using sunscreen whenever possible.

Oh ouch, I feel for you! My recent seatbelt-shaped sunburn peeled THREE times. I thought that was bad, but it sounds like yours is even worse. Why do us redheads know better but always forget to put sunscreen on somewhere?! I hope it stops hurtin soon!!

Trying . . . hard . . . not . . . to coment on . . . TRAMP STAMP!!!! ;)

Sorry, I didn't get my first (mild)sun burn until my mid 20's. (Most pale skin people hate me when I say that.) Still, I use sun screen. Skin cancer be a bitch! I hope it gets better soon!

Totally feel your pain!! I did that a few weeks ago myself and had to take a few days off running as wearing anything hurt. I use Aloe Lotion and that helps me more than anything including aloe and lidocaine.

Good luck on a speedy recovery :)

Youch!!!

My Irish heritage feels for you! My own sunburn ended up not being that bad and has pretty much healed up already.

Hopefully you sleep on your stomach :)

As a fellow fair, skinned freckler that burns in the shade, I have had my fair share of redness, even when I remember my sunscreen. Burt's Bees brand makes an after sun lotion that is the bee's knees (see what I did?). Like the best thing EVER. I have recommended it to a few other people and they are also surprised at how well it works and it doesn't feel as sticky as aloe. Srsly, give it a try!!

OWWWWWWWW.

Posts like this remind me when I'm glad I'm half Mexican. This just doesn't happen to me.

Goodness, girl, I hope it feels better soon!

Pour vinegar in a bath- water whatever temp you can stand. I've only used white vinegar, so I don't know if any vinegar will work. Sure it stinks, but it takes the pain out of the burn.

Yep, I've been there, too. I've even had horrible purple sunburns in small spots that I managed to miss in the sunscreen applying process. Those take years to finally go away.

oh OUCH! hope it's feeling better quickly! (and from a fellow pasty girl, I feel your pain...)

It doesn't take long for the sun to do it's damage! That looks painful. Be careful!

Wow ... that really looks unpleasant. Going sailing in a few days and I'm crazy paranoid about getting a sunburn. Hope that angry burn calms down quickly. At least it's not an injury.

All I'll say about the tattoo is I'm amazed by how many people, especially those you wouldn't expect, have one somewhere. Amazed that I didn't sober up and find one somewhere on myself in my younger years.

Sunburns suck! I was a little sunburned recently too (not as bad as you) and it was painful. Hope you feel better soon.

Ouch!!! Sunburns scare me and hurt like hell, so I'm always the dork slathering and reslathering SPF50 on my shoulders and face and ears. I've heard drinking lots of water helps flush your system after sunburns and helps the skin regenerate, so if you're not already drinking buckets of water today, maybe try that too? Heal better soon :)

Oh NO!! That looks terrible! My Husband thinks he is invincible when it comes to sunburn and rarely wears sunscreen (so stubborn). Because of that we keep stock of this Ocean Potion After Sun Aloe Lotion http://www.opotion.com/pages/aftersun-lotions.html

The Hubs SWEARS by it.
