3 Things Thursday

  1. Southbound... Tonight we're headed to Florida for the weekend to celebrate my friend Ebs' 30th birthday. While we're there we've lined up a long run with my beloved running frenemy, Harold, and his girlfriend and I can't wait! We've had a tradition since I moved away of meeting for a run when I visit, but the last few times I was injured. We've got eight miles on deck and the weather is actually supposed to be decent! (i.e. Not melt-your-face-off hot.)

  2. T-T-T-Training... Lots of exciting stuff happening in my running world; Saturday I ran long, seven whole miles! I had Spike drop me off at a trailhead and I ran to the next one. I was nervous it wasn't going to go well since I wasn't quite recovered from my NYC trip, but it actually went great and Spike's suggestion to not look at my watch until I finished made all the difference in the world. Then on Monday, I ran my first track workout in over two years! Despite the wind, it went better than I expected; I am loving having a training plan again!

  3. Side stitches... Does anyone have any theories on these things? I had the toughest run this morning and it was all because I had the worst case of side stitches the entire time. Was it because I didn't get enough sleep last night? Because I didn't eat anything before my run? Was I dehydrated? I swear I've never had these plague me for an entire run before! What about you? Any horror stories to share?

I don't get side stiches too often but I hate them! I always thought it had something to do with my breathing or dehydration but I have no idea. I'll have to check back to see what others say.

I have decided side stiches are like hiccups. No rhyme or reason as to why they happen. But when they do, they suck!

Awesome job on your run!

I get stitches a lot when I eat something heavy, even if it's had time to digest. Did you eat anything weird that day?

SEVEN MILES!!! HOORAAAAAAYYYYY!

Side stitches sometimes come from whatever is in your stomach -- too much liquid consumed?
The solution: run with your arm over your head like the Statue of Liberty on the side you have the stitch. Bonus: amusing to people around you.

Have a blast in Florida!

YeeHaw for rocking a training plan!
I am probably the opposite where I get stitches when I am a bit dehydrated. Also if I let my breathing get a bit out of control if I am trying to break out of my slow running patterns.

My theory on side stitches: has to do with breathing. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I have no idea if that's true or not but it works for me. I tend to suck in too much air if I'm just breathing through my mouth.

So cool that you are training again. I really am very happy for you.

I really don't know. Mine seem to disappear once I've gotten into a regular running routine.

7 miles?!!??! Your comeback is hitting full steam!

Whenever I get a sidestitch (rarely), I focus on deep breaths in and out.

You always seem to pack so much into your trips. Enjoy the birthday clebration and runs.

Your comeback has arrived, I'd say. 7 miles is fully back into running! WooHooo!

Side stiches? Hummm? I thought I read that they have something to do with breathing and your diaphragm. I'd say a little googling will provide you an answer. Have a great weekend.

Sorry about the side stitches. Funny I just read a blog post from someone that had a theory on how to make them go away. Let me see if I can find it and get back to you.

Side stitches are the worst.
I wish I had a cure or a reason but it seems it is different for everyone.
Not fair. We need to find a cure. :-)

I am not exactly why people get side stitches BUT when I feel one coming on I start to hold my breath a bit. I have heard that if you switch when you in take your breath - aka breathe when your right foot hits the ground, it helps to stop the stitch from getting worse. I have done it a few times and it has worked. I usually just hold my breath and then release after a few strides. I try to also belly breathe and push out my stomach instead of sucking in. I think it does have to do with the diaphragm. I also know that I tend to breathe while running through my chest instead of lower and deeper. Hope this helps :)

HOORAY for a training plan and for getting back to the track. What's when you KNOW you're back, is rocking that first track workout! My HS cross country coach told us that side stitches were from dehydration, but I've never been convinced. If you figure it out, let us know!
