Why?
Because today I ran three miles! Three entire miles, plus an extra .1 just to make it an even 5k. I haven't RUN a 5k since December of 2010 and I haven't run this far period since the injury last March that kept me sidelined until December of 2011.
Today is a turning point for me, today I feel like a real runner again. Which isn't to say I haven't been running since December, but there's just something about reaching the 3 M/5k mark that makes me feel like I'm really "back." And the best part is, I have miles and miles more to go, it only gets better from here!

Once upon a time the concept of running 3 M, 5 M, even 10 M, was taken completely for granted. I trained for marathons people! Three miles was nothing, a warm-up! But then I got injured. I spent days, weeks, months praying for the day I could even run a mile again. Injury puts a lot of things in perspective, especially all the things you take for granted.
Today I ran 3.1 glorious miles on a gorgeous sunny day in Michigan, in February with the biggest smile on my face (much like the one shining bright on my header image above) with one of my closest friends by my side. I am happy, I am healthy, and I am thankful for every single step I take in this R2R.

*So far this year. We all know there will plenty more days like this in the coming months for various reasons. Life is good.

woooooo hoooooo!!
Marking this day on my calendar as AWESOME!!
So happy for you! And excited about your upcoming favorite days later this year. ;)
Yay! This reminded me of when I listen to the song Walking on Sunshine and think Running on Sunshine :)
I can't tell you how happy this makes me. It is even better than hearing that Spike lost to a dog!
Running on Sunshine? I absolutely LOVE that! So happy for you! And just think...from 3 miles, 5 will be nothing and so on and so forth! Crossing my fingers that you'll be able to run at least a fall Half!
I feel the same way about the 3 mile mark. I was out for 2 months with a hip injury in 2010/2011 and was so thrilled when I hit the 3 mile mark, after limiting myself to just 1 and 2 miles at a time for a while. Congrats on your run and best of luck moving forward. :)
Yay! Yay! Yay! Here's to a zillion more sunshine-filled miles!
Hooray! Congrats! Oh--and I never got around to posting the other day, but I've seen lots of people distinguish between, for example, pre-baby and post-baby PRs, so I think you can and should absolutely celebrate post-injury PRs!
That is so freaking awesome!!!
(Since I like to look at the bright side of things)
Your injury will allow you to "relive" all those firsts again. Like in history there is BC and AD for you it will be BI and AI (before injury/after injury). Just think you get to set a whole new bunch of PRs, AI style!!
Great news - congratulations!!!
Wahooooooooooo!!!!
Congrats!
And what a perfect day to run 3.1 miles on!
BOOYA! Dang that must feel so good. 3 miles ain't no piddly little run. That's legit. Cheers to a great run and here's to many, many, MANY more great runs this year! (PS how's wedding planning? when's the big day again?)
I'm very very proud and happy for you. Sadly, I don't think you are on pace to be one of those 2012 miles in 2012 people.
<3
YAY! Great job and so glad you are feeling like a runner again! Its only going to get better from here!
yay!!
It's funny, I think we all take for granted the short runs when things are going well. I know I was until I got this stupid head cold! Now I can't wait to get back out there even if it is only a short distance.
So happy that your R2R is going well!
Yay!!!! What a great milestone to accomplish! :-)
YOU ARE BACK!!! :-) It's crazy to think that it is almost March and almost the one year anniversary of your injury. I'm so glad you are able to get back to doing what you love.
How exciting! Congrats lady!
Whoop whoop! That is so exciting. I have to agree, 3 miles really does feel like a "real run" whereas shorter runs just don't feel quite enough. So happy for you.
Congrats! P.S. I sent a friend to your blog. Her family will be moving to michigan soon (military orders). We went to nursing school together and she was freaking about running in the cold. I knew you could point her in the right direction:) Thanks!
Awesome! You can now outrun zombies!!!
The most awesomest news ever!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!
The most awesomest news ever!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!
CONGRATS!!! So happy for you.
Sweet glorious 5K! You have taught me to appreciate every step I can run!
I'm so happy for you, sweet friend! to many MANY more glorious miles!
Terrific post.
It does two things for me:
1- Makes me happy to know you are happy.
2- Reminds me that I have been given a gift and I should never take it for granted.
This will be better than that little day coming up in October ;) jk jk.
Woo hoo! I am always beyond excited for you and your recent achievements. You deserve many healthy miles!
Damnit, now I have to run 3.2 miles........ HA
Yaaaaaaaaaay!
