3 Things Thursday

  1. Randomess at it's Best: My favorite part of B.o.B's Tour de Mitten visit was all the randomness we encountered (or created). I mean who doesn't need a hat with hair already attached or really bizarre salt and pepper shakers like these:

The outhouse ones say, "Full of S" and "Full of P." Gross.
Also, Spike looks weird with "hair."

Then there were the random animal carvings...

  2. Winter Hacienda: Perfectly timed for the impending winter storm we're about to get creamed with, the Winter Hacienda is this weekend. You may remember I mentioned something about this in my January wrap up; the guys are having an eating contest to get naming rights for two unborn Hacienda babies. This year's contest will be whoever can eat a TB Grande meal the fastest. My bets are on Spike.

    "Dear Inappropriately Named Hacienda Baby,

I'm sorry Uncle Spike named you that terrible name.

    Love, Aunt Red"

  3. Races Ahoy: I mentioned last week that I had been race shopping and over the weekend I officially registered for two upcoming races. First up, Corktown, which is in it's 30th running in downtown Detroit. This race is huge so Spike and I have decided this one will be a fun run for sure. It'll also be the first 5k I will be able to run in it's entirety since my R2R began! Woot! Next up will be the Lansing Marathon 5k, which will help me kill some time while I wait for Spike (and a blogger friend who hasn't announced officially that he/she is running it yet) to finish. I intend to "race" this one, though it's hard to imagine "racing" a 5k when I know I am a far cry from being able to PR. Considering my 5k PR will be two years old by then, I think it's time to let it go and start over. (FYI: 5k PR = 22:19) I have not however, signed up for the 10k I've been eying. I've decided I'd like to get at least 5 miles under my belt before I pull the trigger. (This is what happens when you waste $300 on races you couldn't run because you were injured for 9 months.)

How old do you think a PR has to be before it's no longer considered a PR?

Eww to the S&P shakers! The hats are funny, though.

Have so much fun this weekend. Can't wait to find out the results. ;)

I think a PR stands until it's broken, BUT it requires a qualification if it's more than a few years old.

Records are never voided because they are too old. Your PR will never expire.

"Full of S and Full of P" - bwahahaha! Hilariously inappropriate! And, yes, kind of gross too :)

I'm so excited about your R2R - and a PR is a PR forever.

My 5K PR will be two years old this summer and even though Miles will be a year old, I don't think I'll be close to beating it. I sort of like the idea of starting over. That said, I'd hold out to see what the year holds for you - you never know how epic your comeback will be :)

My opinion? Once you get a well-earned PR, don't ever ever ever let go of it. No expiration date on PR's. ;)

PR stands till broken... I know I will never PR again in a lot of distances.... I just have to accept that fact

5 miles! squeeee! look at you!!

i would be more concerned about being named "aunt red" than anything spike could come up with for the hacienda baby.

I am so excited to see you and Spike again!! I'll be at Corktown too! Look for the big pregnant runner. :-)

And a PR is a PR until you break it and set another PR!

yay for racing again Boo! just the thought of it makes me so happy for you!

a PR is a PR for life!

My 5K PR was my 23:20 from high school (1991) and that was my PR until I broke it at the Shamrocks and Shenanigans in 2008. So, 17 years went by, and I still considered that my PR. Now, it's 22:13, from April 2009. That one might be it, forever. I'd like to say I can break 22:00 someday...but that may never happen.

Right now I'd just like to run a 5K in under 26:00. :)

My great-grandmother use to collect salt and pepper shakers. When she passed away she had three china cabinets full of them plus boxes and boxes of them in her attic. Whenever I see interesting sets, I think of my "Grammal B" But not so much when I saw the potty ones. ;-)

Yeah for Red racing!!

I think a PR can become a Lifetime PR esp. after you have been running/racing for decades. It's nice to still remember what I could do in my "glory" days. heehee

Little Red Racing Hood is back! I'll e at Corktown passing out food and having a few BEvERages.....

I never though as a PR as something that expired!

However you could have post injury PRs or later on life PRs if you take up running again when you are older...

at least that is my opinion.

Glad to see you out there racing again :)

I think you can start over and get as many R2R PR's as races you run!!

no expiration date on a PR
you did it
it is yours
forever

Spike needs all the hair help he can get!

Who can eat it the fastest? Does that mean who can get it in their stomach the fastest? Or are you timing all the way in the stomach and through the entire system??? haha

Your PR is always your PR. However, if you say, run a 4 hour marathon at 25, you can't call yourself a 4-hour marathoner at 35 unless you still running 4-hour marathons.

I like the idea of R2R PR's though! Kinda of like Booze Hounds Married PRs. You'll get to have those soon too!!!

A PR is like a photograph, capturing a moment on a stopwatch instead of a camera. It lasts forever ... until your epic comeback is complete and you smash it to dust.

Glad to see you're back racing. You've earned the hell out of it.

I’d love to provide everyone with an example name in case I win, but none are appropriate…

A PR is forever, but.... When you've been racing for over 30 years, one is tempted to qualify things somewhat. I've been thinking of dividing my PRs into 20th-century and 21st-century versions. There's virtually no chance of besting my 20th-century self at any distance, but times that are only a decade or so old still may fall!

I have to agree with the R2R PR concept. Normally I would say 2 years is the limit, but life experiences change people. If someone were to suffer an amputation, would their new running PR's even be on the same comparison playing field as before the change. No way!

New Red! New PR's!!

Jon said...

I say you get a new clean slate with the PR's. Excited for ya!

Good question. I know this has been covered in Runner's World although I forget what they actually said. I want to say it was something along the lines of if it's so old you have no chance of ever breaking it or if it's so old that people will give you a weird look if you tell them how old it is.

Personally I also think high school/college PRs should be different than post-college because our bodies are so different. Same would go for a woman who has a baby.

I think a PR lasts forever. However, I used to be way speedier in high school when I ran cross country. Without a lot of training and determination, I doubt I'll ever be that fast again. I just googled myself and it says my fastest 5k cross country time was 21:40 as a senior in high school. I can't even imagine running that fast now. My "grown-up" PR is 24:02and that was in 2008.
Spike looks like he should be in a boy band with that 'hair'.

Viper said...

I agree a PR lasts forever, but the further you are from ever breaking that record, you have to start adding qualifiers, like post-30 PR or Married PR or whatever else you can think of. Cheers!

Signing up for that first race after an injury comeback - SWEET.

B.o.B. in a trucker hat is hard to fathom.....btw what does the hat say? I'm getting old and I can't read that.

PR's are good for at least 10 years. i mean, i still claim my half-pr from 2009, and if that hasn't improved by 2019 then i will extend my 10 year rule :)

i can't wait to hear what spike (or in the rare event he is unable to inhale a TB meal) -whoever the winner is- names these babies!

Kathy said...

Ah, road trip too dads - SO FUN!!! A PR is a PR - no matter what. I suppose we should categorize by age bracket (decades, maybe) - meh, who knows...
Good luck with your races. I've officially recruited 3 other Colorado runners to come out for the Detroit Marathon - woo hoo!

Heather @ Dietitian on the Run said...

It's so random to see him with hair! Weird.

Um, Hacienda baby??? Huh?

PRs are PRs as long as you want them to be. Your muscles, your rules.

Lisa said...

I love all the randomness that can be found in Michigan. Especially northern Michigan, I feel. Did you get Paczki's for Fat Tuesday? It seems only Michiganders who've moved to NYC know about them! Did you have to loan B.o.B. the winter coat!? I'm so excited for you that you've signed up for two races! I definitely have to check out the Corktown race. Sounds like fun!

I saw almost as many guys with that hair hat on at Disney last week as I did people in scooters!!!

Don't get me started on how many people were wearing Sketchers Shape Ups...
