What do you get when you have products to review but are injured and can't put them to the test? The worst product reviews ever! Yay!
Typically speaking my reviews for products are done after extensive testing but in my current injured state all the products I've received to review lately came ill timed thanks to late breaking developments with said injury. After great debate, I decided I didn't want to sit on these products forever waiting to heal, especially with a giveaway involved, so I decided to rigorously (and by rigorous I mean, not rigorous at all) "test" them during my recent 5k walk. Lame I know.
So without further ado please humor and forgive me for these truly lame "reviews." Your patience and humor will be rewarded with a giveaway, so make sure you gut it out to the end!
First up, Columbia sent me this Omni-Dry Peak Power Shell Jacket. It has an ultra-light laminate membrane that's over 50% air, making the jacket insanely breathable and lighter than other 3-layer shells like it. Because they sent it to me in June, I didn't really have much, if any chance to use it until just recently.
My thoughts: I've now worn it in everything from a chilly 50* to nasty rainy wind-gusting weather and it definitely performs; It's a solid rain jacket, uber light, and all around perfect Spring/Fall jacket but... but... it's SO LOUD! As in every single movement makes you sound like you're a cat in a paper bag!

So. Annoying.**Fear not feline-loving friends (Sun Runner), no actual cats were paper-bagged for the making of this post.
Moving on...
Even further back, in March, just before I ended up with this lovely injury, everybody's favorite compression performance apparel company, Zensah, offered me the chance to test out their newly re-sized arm sleeves after I left them a message on their FB wall wondering if they were ever going to get size XS arm sleeves. I was so stoked to get these and had planned on rocking them for the Martian Half Marathon in April, but alas y'all know how that played out and since then, I haven't had an opportunity or need to wear them.
My Thoughts: Since it was a bit chilly race morning I decided to double up my new sleeves with the bolero I'm about to review below. Obviously it's not much of a test drive, but I have to say that they do in fact fit SO MUCH BETTER!!! As in I no longer have to ghetto rig them with safety pins to keep them up where they need to be like I had to with my old pair of size S/M sleeves. I can't vouch for how they ultimately perform but just the mere fact that I don't need to roll them over to safety pin in place gives me confidence they will work well in action. Oh and they still feel just as soft and tantalizingly smooth as my old pair, which of course makes me want to wear them around just so I can pet myself. Anyway, check out the new fit:
Thank you Zensah for letting me try out the newly re-sized sleeves, they fit so much better and I can't wait to give them a proper test drive when I'm back at it!My Thoughts: Since it was a bit chilly race morning I decided to double up my new sleeves with the bolero I'm about to review below. And finally, time to get to the review that also features a giveaway!!!
So as if getting the previous two items ill timed didn't suck enough, the awesome people at YMX by Yellowman saw that I was getting my ride on all summer with Leela and sent me this awesome cycling jersey and this extra awesome bolero... which of course I received the day after my doctor told me I could no longer ride Leela. You do not even want to know how sad I was. I mean look at how awesome these two are AND they fit me, WELL! I had been having such a problem finding cycling jersey's small enough to fit me. Needless to say, I'm not getting much use of them these days with all my stationary biking .::snore::. so that's when I decided, eff it, I'm wearing them for my 5k walk!
My Thoughts: As you can see above, the cycling jersey ($98) has a flattering, snug fit, and is a nice long length with pockets in the back. The zipper is flush so when it's zipped up you can't even notice it's there and unzipped it goes down to mid boob range. The fabric is super comfortable and breathable as I learned when I started to break a small sweat walking in the sun. It's priced competitively as far as I can tell, as most jersey's I looked at online and in stores came in around the $80-$120 range. I think they'd make a killing if they lowered it to the $50-$75 range, being that my personal shopping habit is almost always driven more by price than print and I think most people's are too, BUT I will def make an exception now that I know their product fits me so well and the prints are so much fun.
The bolero ($59), or shrug as I call it, is perfect to wear for a ride that is/gets chilly and/or a run because you can so easily put it on/take it off. I think it's a little over priced since most people would compare this to sleeves which usually come in around $30. That's not to say that it's not totally worth it as you can so easily wrap it around your waist whereas when I am wearing sleeves I never know what to do with them if I get too hot and end up tucking them in to the back of my shorts and then they drive me crazy flapping around, hitting my back and butt. In the end it's a personal preference whether to choose the sleeves vs. bolero, I think I'll have a hard time deciding one over the other because I really love them both. And with that being said, guess what time it is?
~GIVEAWAY TIME~
I warned YMX that this review of their products would be especially lame and they responded with "Not all of our customers can be totally extreme all the time!" and encouraged me to post the review and giveaway for a Tribal Sea Run Tee (I imagine if a dude wins this they will pick an alternative men's product) to one of you for putting up with this extra lame review! I'm not going to lie, having to use the word "bolero" makes me way more likely to wear sleeves. Also, wearing a shorty jacket doesn't really scream "I'm a really fast runner/competitor" like sleeves do.
Followed on Facebook
Going to have to go with the bolero. I like the idea of being able to tie them ratehr then having to stash them when not needed. Plus they seem to be more fluid in appearance - looks like a regular long sleeve tee when worn as apposed to the cutoff sleeve look.
I followed them.
sleeves for me, bolero makes my ass look big.
and i got the same crinkly blue coat! NOISY HUSH COAT!
I "liked" them! :-)
Following on Twitter!
i liked them and totally want a bolero! it looks stinking adorable on you so i wonder if it'll look that cute on anyone else. lol!
obnoxious clothese...hm.
oh i have a pair of jeans that for some reason make a popping noise in the crotch. i'm not lying here. i think they are too low in that area or something. i'm dead ass serious. i'll show you next time i see you! Lol!
I like the idea of the bolero over arm sleeves because the arm sleeves seem a little hipster to me. Although maybe that's not a bad thing. But the bolero looks so cute. Like you are about to run to ballet class. And I occasionally take dance class. So. There you go.
I liked them on Facebook!
bolero all the way!! Looks fab in your photo. I've tired sleeves before... something new:)
I have some 'swish' pants as I call them that I absolutely love the feel of the inside fabric; but the sound of the outside material rubbing on each other is enough to make you scream!
I liked them on facebook!
I love the way the bolero looks but does it even get cold enough here in FL to wear sleeves or a bolero?? I'm so hot natured!!!
I like them on Facebook.
I like the look of the bolero but I think arm sleeves would be more practical.
You safety pinned sleeves to your arms?!? Ouch. I hope zensah kicks in some $$ for your health insurance.
Whoa talk about fashion sense! That swirly-ness combined with the black and white whatever-ness. Should I nominate you for Design Star or What Not to Wear?
I, too, am polluting the world with blue jacket noise pollution. I think they were also geared toward extreme sports... But I don't think it would mesh well with hipster trail runners and the environment.
I would wear that bolero to work before I wore it on the bike. That's mostly because I work 4-5 days a week and bike 4-5 times a season. Is that a feather-boa-like trim?
I like you on Facebook.
I liked them on FB. The bolero is really cute and you can tie it around your waist when you are warm. I had a pair of cheapie, noisey running shorts...tossed them eventually.
I like them on facebook and follow them on twitter
I like the bolero better, then the sleeves are attached to each other and I don't have to worry about losing one.
I am following on FB!
The bolero is interesting - I would be much less likely to lose it as I could tie it around my waist - and there is only one of them!
My obnoxious, not often worn piece of equipment is the race shirt I got that was designed for Brittany Spears - technical shirt but way too short for this modest, belly flab loving girl.
I follow them on Facebook & Twitter.
You are totally badass in those sleeves....running or not! Think I need to go order up that color pronto.
Ok back on topic: I follow YMX on FB and Twitter.
I love sleeves. They're my tried and true. But there's something about that damn bolero that calls to me.
I like sleeves just so that they would be easier to take off once I warmed up. That being said, I think the bolero is great for those that have trouble with sleeves that won't stay up.
I have a running jacket that is LOUD. Also, it's not very breathable so I always end up flinging sweat out the cuffs. Kinda gross for myself and anyone too close.
I have an obnoxious Jekyll and Hide running top that is divine until 10 miles on the dot when it begins chafing raging crimson rings around the armholes. It's Sooooo good. Until 10. then all hell breaks loose.
I have liked YMX on facebook
I like the idea of TRYING a bolero at least once. I have problems with sleeves either being too tight (ouch and unflattering) or too loose (and won't stay up). Having never tried a bolero, i don't know what the pros/cons are, but I'd sure like to try it out!!!!
I liked via facebook :)
I followed them on Facebook.
I think I prefer the arm sleeves, but I've never worn a bolero. I love my arm warmers because when I get hot I just roll them down and wear them like wristbands to wipe the sweat off my face.
The only obnoxious piece of gear that comes to mind right now is the sparkle skirt. I wore one for a half marathon and it was really itchy. It finally dawned on me to flip over the elastic and that seemed to do the trick. They are cute, but not very functional.
HA, she's still posting and look at those guns!!!!!!
Like them on fb. Awesome bolero!
love it! i'm super super excited about the zensah sleeves especially since i left mine on the streets of boston. maybe i'll need some arm sleeves come february here in florida? i always need excuses for more gear :)
Ok, I "liked" them on Facebook. And btw, I don't think your reviews are nearly as lame as you say. They are still well argued and tell us what we need to know. Don't be so hard on yourself!
Balero v. sleeves: sleeves. I just like the look better.
And finally, obnoxious clothing. That one's hard. I've had shorts that don't chafe until mile 20, head bands that won't stay put, "water resistant" jackets that resist nothing. But obnoxious? Oh, I know. Garmins set to beep every tenth or quarter of a mile during a race. I cannot get away from those people fast enough!
great reivews! love the cat in the paper bag ref :)
That YMX gear is awesome!!
like em on FB
oh-I follow them on twitter too..
anyway,
i think the bolero looks awesome but gotta say i am more inclined to go with sleeves. love those zensah ones too. i like loud and bright. guess that is why i like ymx stuff so much
my most obnox pc of gear right now breaks my heart!!
my tri team tri top--i hate the cut of it. it's short and it's so THICK thru the back and arms.
i love wearing my kit to support the KBTC but the thing rides up to my booobs and it pinches my armpits
:(
i wish they would change the cut.
with that said, LOVE my tough chik tri top--it fits PURRRRFECT.
(gos with the cat/bag ref huh??)
I liked YMX on the FB.
I like the idea of sleeves better because it's easier to take them off and, honestly, I run as naked as possible. In fact sleeves make a lot of sense for me as I could still go shirtless in even colder temps. But sleeves without a shirt make me think of assless chaps and assless chaps just aren't for me. Well, I don't think they are, I've never tried them but I don't think I need to either.
I do not have a witty "cat in a paper bag" sort of clothing dilemma but I hate a few things. One are my shorts that have size adjusters on the side. THEY DO NOT WORK. I make them small for my FIT waist and then they just readjust themselves until I find "pants on the floor." My other clothing qualm is old underwear. When it looses the snug feeling it's time to go but those last few times you wear it you're just...hating LIFE.
Oh, come on, cats in paper bags are AWESOME!
I sometimes leave a paper bag on my floor for the purpose of feline amusement. :)
Nice spin on the reviews. You make me laugh!
You are too funny - love the cat in a paper bag comparison AND your honesty. Okay, that is a SICK cycling jersey! I've got two cycling jerseys as, like you, I'm just starting out. It's all so so pricey! But this is really cute stuff! I'm off to "like" them on FB, follow them on Twitter and search the site for maybe some PINK gear!
Follow YMX on fb and twitter-Suz4AU0608 is my name on twitter
I just don't like boleros and they tend to get on my nerves so I'd rather battle with sleeves!
Most annoying thing to me about some of the workout clothes are the running shorts that are too short, don't stay in place, and I spend half my time pulling them back down. After one instance of this they get moved to the "workout clothes that are never worked out in but merely worn around the house" pile.
I'm following @WearYMX on Twitter.
I'm not sure I like the idea of a bolero while running or cycling. It seems like it may start to blow off and may be annoying to try to keep it on?
I want a bolero (that's a Spanish bull fighter, right?). Send him over!
I follow YMX on twitter.
i love my running sleeves because i can take them off so easily on a run. since the shrug would be made out of thin fabric, I'd think it'd be easy to 'pack in pack out' too. I'd try a shrug for sure, since it'd be nice that it wouldn't fall down at the arms.
I for sure had my fair share of obnoxious clothing, growing up as an art teacher's daughter. I know I went through a phase at one point that had those little hippie jingle bells on everything - i'm sure that was annoying to everyone.
also, i'm a bit disappointed that there were no actual cats in paper bags for this post. it makes me want to try it with my cat.....
I would totally like a bolero. Not only will it make me feel more Hispanic because it's called a bolero but it looks super cool. On a more serious note, I think it would work perfectly for the Florida temps. It's never so cold that you need a big jacket but it gets cold enough to need sleeves or something. I like that it looks small but you can still tie it around your waist. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. :)
I had this old fuel belt that I used for years. Nothing was wrong with it other than it looked old and abused. So I went to the running store and spent all this money on a brand new, extra fancy fuel belt with a nice big pouch and removable clips for water bottles----and i absolutely hate it. It bounces, it chafes like a mo-fo, I can't get it tight enough. So now i am back to my old beat-up one that fits very nicely thank you. I am kind of digging the bolero over the sleeves. I liked YMX on facebook and I am following them on twitter. thanks for the giveaway opportunity.
I "liked" them! :-)
where did it go??? i SWEAR i commented...
anyway....following on "the Twitter."

The bolero is nice if you run in a long-line sports bra top, because it covers that bit of your back that is open on your shoulder blades. But i live in Florida, so I would go with sleeves. Which are better than old gym socks!
I don't know if this counts as obnoxious personality, but when I was a teen I had a pink skirt I wore with pink leggings underneath (which was cool then) and I always got my period in that outfit! Luckily the leggings were a buffer.
I liked YMX on FB.
I actually like both sleeves or a bolero. Sometimes sleeves are not quite enough.
My Army PT shorts. There have been two versions that I wore over the years. The orginal version, cotton-y. They had built in "underwear" that was crinkly in the middle. How do I say what it felt like to your girl bits while running....hummm over-stimulation maybe?!!
The current version doesn't try to get too friendly in the built in "underwear" area but now the shorts are cut in a very square way. This seems to make the ride up on everyone. What is it with the Army pt shorts wanting to get too close to my crotch?
Jealous about Columbia sending you stuff. Not so jealous about them sending you 'loud stuff'! ;)
I lalalalalove that bolero!
And I like YMX on FB :)
