The Low Down on the Break Down

There were a lot of questions on today's post and rather than go about answering individually I figured I’d address them all at once by giving you the play-by-play.

First things first, what started off as the initial problem has ceased to exist and a new one formed in it's place. So what started with the right leg, ended with the left.

Remember that pinched nerve issue I wrote about a few weeks ago? Well I haven’t had a single episode in well over two weeks. Mr. Right Leg has been fit as a fiddle, wondering why he’s not being utilized to capacity.

Enter Mr. Left Leg (who clearly was jealous of all the attention Mr. Right Leg was getting); Two weeks ago I ran the 20 miler turned 13 and immediately followed it up by going to the Ingham County Sports Clinic. Once there I filled them in on all the crazy nerve related activity Mr. Right Leg had been having but that it wasn’t the right leg that ruined the run but rather my left. After my lower back started aching way to early in the run my gait broke down going in to Mile 12 and I had been limping from ol' lefty ever since. They pretty much just wrote it off after poking and prodding it a little and focused on the right leg because of all the issues I had been having with it. Since then I have been hobbling around like Quasimodo confused at what the heck happened and while there have been some good days, it seemed like no amount of xtraining/non-running has helped. The two short runs I attempted earlier in the week left me feeling lost in Limboland because I was running; but hobbling around even worse after.

Last night at the Playmakers Injury Clinic I replayed my story to a specialist that had seen me before during the demise of my Grand Rapids cycle. She was perplexed and referred me to THE MSU doc, the one that works on all the college athletes. I regurgitated my story, again, and he got to work poking, prodding, having me gimp around, etc... Then he looked me straight in the eye and told me he suspected a stress fracture. I cried. I informed him that I do not have insurance, was in the process of acquiring some, and he set to work making arrangements to get me x-ray'd to start the process of confirming his suspicions. In the meantime he wanted me off my leg ASAP and I was to revisit him at the MSU Sports Medicine office first thing in the morning for follow-up x-rays. I hobbled out of the store with a broken heart and spirit. I hope you all will forgive me for not discussing it immediately after, but I didn’t want to throw around such a heavy prognosis without having confirmation.

When I arrived at his office this morning I was whisked into x-ray upon arrival and shortly after we were examining them on the computer screen. He warned me that x-rays don’t always show stress fractures but lo and behold there it was on the screen; an abnormality in my tibia, a stress fracture. On the one hand I had an answer, on the other it was one the one no runner ever wants to hear. He then informed me that if I was going to get one, having it on the back side of the tibia was the best place to get it as they heal well, and then he moved on to my recovery plan which is as follows:

  • I’m to hobble around on crutches for up to 10 days or until I can walk without pain, during which time I can only swim.

  • After the 10 days and/or walking without pain is up I can give up the crutches and start to xtrain again via elliptical and cycle.

  • Around May, so long as there is still no pain, I can begin running again. No more than 2 miles, every other day, slowly, on soft surfaces only. (i.e. Track/Trail)

  • By June I can add speed and up to a mile a week but not both in the same week and by July I should be able to resume normal running.

So that’s the plan, man.

And for what it’s worth, I’m so glad I’ve been doing all those NTC workouts because otherwise my arms would be shot from hobbling around on these crutches.

These guns can take the pressure even if my leg can’t.
(And yes those ARE plush Angry Birds in the background... Spike's addiction knows no bounds)

As a fellow no insurance injured runner, all I can say is doesn't it at least feel good to be one step closer to a possible diagnosis??!! I put off the podiatrist forever because of the insurance thing and thought once I did get insurance they wouldn't pay for any treatment because the injury was pre-existing (HATE healthcare in America!)... well, a huge fiasco with the insurance (Did I mention I hate healthcare in this country) left me w/o so I finally went to the podiatrist and that alone was so reliving. FINALLY, someone who has more than a WebMD giving me an answer!!

Hang in there girl!! Will look forward to hearing what occurs...in the meantime, I heard Ben and Jerry's cures all..not that I'd know that first hand!

Im glad that the NTC helped to get those guns in shape! Sorry babe about the bad news! BUT you are a rockstar and you will be stronger next time around!

wow. um. Wow. I'm not very articulate. Those are some seriously serious guns though...

You want me to send some swimming workouts? I like to do sprint intervals until I feel like I'm going to throw up, but that's just my swimming strategy.

Oh my gosh girl, I am so sorry to hear this news... but it really sounds like you have such a positive, strong attitude about the whole thing. You inspire me! (also? your guns are MAD impressive) Hang in there with the PT and you'll be back and running in no time! Injuries SUCK but they are totally recoverable.. my heart is with ya! MUAH.

Agreed about the guns . . . in a word . . . WoW!

I am so sorry to hear about the strss farcture. I am a cup half full kind a guy, but I know that sometimes that kind of positivity can be annoying. Let me just say, that a wish you speedy recovery, I am glad that it was caught early, and you are getting proper treatment!

Wo-wo-woah! I come here to get running info ... looks I found the Gun Show site!

Danielle said...

Ahh Morgan I'm so sorry! I feelt your pain. Maybe we can have a gun show together when were both off crutches. I have 15 days down and 13 more to go until I go back to the doctor and see where to go from here.
Keep your head up! At least you know what's going on and how to fix it! Thnking of you!

Nice guns!! I suddenly feel very inadequate...

I feel really bad about your injury! That totally sucks and I can't even imagine what you are going through.

It sounds like you have some good people taking care of you though. I will keep you in my thoughts and wish you a speedy recovery! :)

And if you ever get frustrated, you can always chuck the angry birds at Spike.

Noooo to crutches!!! Those bad boys were the death of me. Im glad you are going to let your leg recover. Your pits are going to be screaming!

Punch an Angry Bird. You'll feel better, I guarantee. ;)

blogger hugs! Thankful that it was in a place that heals well. Thankful you only have to be on crutches for a few days. Thankful you can run again within such a short period. If it would make you feel any better, the day after my fastest high school CC meet ever, I was doing intervals and felt my shin crack. I was out for 4 months and had to resort to throwing shot, which was hilarious but sad.

Kandi said...

I'm so glad you were able to get a diagnosis despite your insurance issues. I hope the time on crutches and without running flies by for you. Those guns are awesome! And I like how it looks like you are going to punch the Angry Birds. :)

ShutUpandRun said...

Well, crap I am so sorry and you know I "get" it. If you need to talk, vent, let me know. Crutches stink and so does not being able to run, but you always have such a great perky attitude and you will come through this. Hang in there girl.

Marlene said...

Nice guns!!! I would be screwed on crutches! Zero upper body strength right here.

I'm glad you got your diagnosis - though not a great one - and are on the road to recovery. Hopefully this will be but a distant memory before long.

In the meantime, Spike and those Angry Birds better watch out!!!

Bethany + Ryan said...

nice upper bod!!! wow, total bummer to hear about the stress fracture but also a relief to finally have a diagnosis too i would imagine. At least you know what is wrong and now you can work towards fixing it. will be thinking about you! hopefully you'll get the package soon. hang in there and keep us posted!!! :-/

Mamarunsbarefoot said...

Well you know I can relate, I have been sidelined from 2 marathons with a stress fracture not to mention running a marathon on one. Heal up quickly my friend. Also an easy gaudge when you are close to running is a simple hop test. If you can hop up and down on that one leg totally pain free you prb can start SLOWLY running. :)

lindsay said...

well your guns are hot. :) again, i must recommend my chocolate medicine. those colorful pills (labeled with an "m") fix everything....

while it sucks... at the same time it's good to have an answer! get your aquajog on!

is this clinic free? i gotta go check it out. pretty cool resource, if so. i was hoping for a sap story about how the doc hooked you up with a discount xray too :-/ stupid insurance.

lindsay said...

ahh yes. i clicked your link. cool stuff that it's free. and actually helpful ...

Jon said...

Instead of focusing on the bad, let's look @ the good:

#1) You are young. This WILL heal. Many running days ahead! Boston ain't going anywhere.

#2) You have an ANSWER! No more, "What the F is wrong with me?!?!?"

#3) Time to learn about to swim and to bike ;)....*hint hint*

On one side- Crap! Stress fractures fear is something I'm all too familiar with.
On the other side- Yeah! You now have a diagnosis! Now it's time to get on the right path to recovery!

I hope NTC give you some marketing dollars, because those are impressive guns there!

SOrry about the stress fracture, girl. At least you'll be able to do some cross training in the near future, hopefully.

Ugh. I am so sorry to hear this. At least you have a diagnosis now and you're officially on the path to full recovery and no more gremlins. Those are some smokin' guns!

1. Stress Fracture are the dreaded words no runner wants to hear. And it down right sucks. And I feel incredibly sorry for you. Seriously, as said, I've seriously have thise annoying twinching feeling in my stomach just reading your story. You so do NOT deserve this!

2. You have a diagnosis. And a recovery plan. And an MD that seems to know what he's talking about. That's more than most runners have.

3. And this one's going to sound cliché, but it's true. You will get out of this a stronger and better runner. No doubt in my dumb-ass mind you will!

Unprofessional said...

Blaaahhh...any injury blows, but you've got a plan. Take it easy, you have the rest of your life to run. When I got hurt a few years back, I rushed into running way to quickly and landed myself off my legs for close to 6 months...don't do what I did. Just do what the doctor says, don't do anything that hurts more than a twinge, and use your new free time to do fabulous things...obviously things that are slightly less fabulous than running, but fabulous things nonetheless. Hang in there, girly!!

MichaelRunner said...

Aw man, the Suck-O-Meter is seriously pegged. Sorry to hear this. I can totally empathize with you. My injury came to a head while I was trying to run my first 50k and I stopped at 23 miles. My longest run since that day, Nov 27th, has been 8 miles. But like some others said, don't let this beat you mentally and you will come back so much stronger. My legs are stronger than ever and I'm coming back with faster paces than before getting injured.

Don't tell anyone, but I think you have better guns than me.

I guess the good news is you have a stress fracture in a location that will heal faster...

Your recovery plan looks like the beginning a tri training...maybe a glimpse of things to come?

Dang. So so sorry to hear this. I hope it does heal as fast as lightening. Take care of it and take care of yourself.

Aw, so sorry to hear it! Tough diagnosis. But here's a good thing--stress fractures are, for the most part, a fairly "straightforward" injury. Follow the plan and you will heal.

Sending you good vibes!

Ugh this is the WORST! I am so sorry about this :( Keep your chin up & I can't wait to meet you in Boston! :)

PS I need to do those NTC work outs!

Fair Weather Runner said...

answers are good, stress fx's blow big fat balls :( here's to quick healing and sanity while just swimming (i did a LOT of swimming and pool running during my stress fx's, it helps!). word to the wise, crutches by the pool can = disaster, be careful. and good luck!

Jess said...

Ugh I am so sorry! Injuries suck!! I am wishing you the speediest recovery. Keep your chin up, no more pity parties you will be a much stronger runner for having gone through this.

J said...

Oh jeez I am addicted to Angry birds too. So sorry to hear all about this. It does suck but at least you know why this has been happening and hopefully now you can heal up and be back and ready for action in the summer. i hope that everything goes according to plan and you heal up real quick!

Nicole @ "Haute Runner" said...

Finally some answers! Not what you wanted to hear but at least you can work towards healing and getting back at it (when you are healed and no sooner!).

Looking forward to hearing about all your swimming/xtraining. Great pipes!!

I can't write one good thing about pinched nerve pain. Not one.

And, I know that Michigan is fairly pro-gun, but make sure you've got a permit for those concealed weapons.

Ugh, so sorry to hear about this. I am sure you will kick ass with this recovery plan though and come out the other side super strong.

Good luck!

I love you. I'm sorry you are broken. You will get better. Crutches are useful to fend away attacking ninjas.

Nelly said...

I'm really sorry to hear about your injury. That must be really tough to take. At least you now know what you are dealing with, because for me the unknown is sometimes the worst thing about anything. You will come back from this, and you will be a strong runner.

Oh, girl. I was so baffled by the "crutches" comment on facebook and have been waiting to read up and see what happened...

First of all, bam POW look at those guns! :) those arms will only get stronger, and then get ready to pull you through the cross-training weeks!

I'm so sorry that you're in this limboland, but as always, your attitude kicks ass and we all know you'll come out stronger when you're ready.
xo!

WOW. I am speechless. I'm just catching up (as it seems to be the case with me and blogging lately). I am so very sorry this happened to you. I know this will be just a little bump on your road to some awesome, great running!!! I'm so glad you got professional help right away.

Hey, thanks for following me and reading about my recovery. I know my posts haven't been too frequent or too entertaining (you know, writing about not running on a running blog, haha!).
