- That's what Friends are for... I have some amazing friends; friends that send me inspiration, that overnight me cookies from Publix because he knows how much I love them, friends that make time amidst an unexpected trip for a family emergency to meet me for dinner, friends that let me sob to them on the bad days, and friends that send me a "secret weapon" to fight off Leg Gremlins;Seriously, how awesome is this? These are friends that are near and far, friends I know in real life and some only from the blog, but I'm thankful for each and every one of them and am blessed to have them all in my life.
- Martian Meetup... This weekend is the Martian Invasion of Races and my long planned Martian Blogger Meetup! I've put a lot of time and effort putting together this meeting of running/blogging peeps and I'm so excited that the time has finally arrived to bring them all together. I'd be lying if I said it's not going to hurt my heart a little to be there sidelined instead of racing, but it's more important I am there to support my friends and Spike and not let this injury get the best of me so I'll settle for official blogosphere spectator and paparazzi instead. Besides meeting a bunch of great new peeps and cheering on my friends, I'm also extremely excited to see Marlene again and FINALLY meet the infamous Stephanie!
- Race Swag... If you're injured but have paid for a race, what do you do about the race swag? I'll admit that last September when I wasn't able to run the Capital City River Run I still picked up my swag and kept the shirt for a training shirt. I've never worn it openly, always under a jacket, because I never wanted to lead anyone in to thinking I had actually run it but at the time I was in serious need of long sleeve tech shirts having just moved from Florida and not owning a lick of winter gear. Last night I volunteered over at Running Fit to put together this weekend's race packets and was discussing this with someone there and they said that since I volunteered for the race I should still get/wear my swag. What say you???

i would take the race bag, too, and have once. but like you, i don't wear the shirt out.
The first marathon I dropped out of I was so crushed that I didn't go to the expo. The second one however, I picked up my swag and use the shirt for painting!
I'd still pick up the swag and wear it, especially since you volunteered!
you volunteered!! so unless the shirt says "finisher" on it, I'd wer it...
I think you should wear it. Your there to support everyone! Cant wait to see you tomorrow! Its been way too long!
I say wear it since you volunteered, although you did not race in the event, you participated! Without volunteers there'd be no race.
I have my Kentucky Derby marathon shirt from last year, I've yet to wear it (since I DNF'd)...still don't know what to do with it...(I did cut up the bib and use it for book marks)
I always take the schwag. I figured I paid at least $100 for it.
Glad you've got lots of people to take care of you!
Friends are the BEST! So glad you've had such awesome support through such a trying time.
And YES, you should take, wear, and not feel guilty about the race swag. Especially since you are volunteering.
Take the swag - you paid for it! On another similar note: if you BQ'd but opted not to run it, can you still purchase the infamous Boston jacket even though you didn't run it yet qualified to? I sort of feel I earned it - especially for what I've had to endure for the past year! :P
Sorry about your leg, Tara told me yesterday while we were swimming what the confirmation was. Here's to hoping it heals quickly!
Take the swag. You paid for it! I'd wear your shirt on Saturday too!
you paid for the sway, you might as well get to keep it right?
Volunteers, as you well know, are the life blood of races. We couldn't do what we do on race day without em. So wear your swag with pride.
How awesome are those friends! The TP is hilarious!!!
Sooo cool that you volunteered at Running Fit! Are we getting some nice goodies? :)
And like you, I'd probabyl wear the shirt as an under layer, but not openly.
I would have been there with you last night had it not been for a certain engineer's birthday.
I think you totally earned your race swag!
Also, I am planning on going to the expo tomorrow after work to pick up my race packet. I hope I see you there. :)
You totally earned that schwag by volunteering! Wear that shirt with pride!
I would have kept the bag, too.
Take and keep the swag! With all the bad leg gremlin luck you've been having: you deserve the swag!
Oh gosh, take the race swag. :) You volunteered and you deserve that. :D
Yep, if you volunteered, you're good to go - but if anyone asks about the shirt and/or race, you have to say that you were a volunteer. I think that's the rule!
(I follow this rule mainly because I love my Javelina Jundred shirts - such high quality - too much not to wear!!)
If I don't run, I don't do packet pick up, but I pretty up always hit up "day of" packet pick up.
I love thoughtful friends!!
Hug Marlene and Steph for me.. Love them both!
You get the Swag without question, and the fact that you volunteered rocks.. Hang in there buddy!!
I would go ahead and take it and just use it as a training shirt. I have talked my daughter out of taking a shirt for a race we registered her for but she didn't run. I then accepted the shirt for her..... in my size so I now have two from that race (yes, I ran it... and it was a good shirt)
I asked her - would you wear a shirt for a race you didn't run and she said she would not... so don't judge me! :)
Just a couple weeks ago I had to drop from the Georgia Marathon full to the half because of an injury leading up to it. They would not change our shirts so I ended up with a marathon shirt even though I ran the half..... similar problem. It will be an early morning training run shirt.
I think if you volunteer it's okay to wear it. but not to another race, just for training. I have weird rules.
oh, and I will wear shirts for races I didn't run to the weight room, because all those boys have sunglasses on and probably can't read anyhow. but I will not run in them.
I would wear the shirt if I volunteered! Otherwise I wouldn't wear except when I need an under layer.
I hope you have a fun weekend!
I would say still pick up the shirt. I don't think anyone would blame you for wearing it. You paid for it and with all your running and injuries, I'm still going to say that you earned it.
I would for sure pick up the swag.. You paid your $$$..
I would wear the shirt around the house to lounge in... Never to run in...
No doubt! Volunteers should get race swag too. So if injury keeps a runner out and they volunteer instead, WOW race swag, EARNED! I don't even care if you run in it because without volunteers (who get nothing!) runners won't have races to run. I say wear it and race it next year!
Your friends are amazing.
Meet ups. No one come to bumkinville. I want a meet up. Well I'll have to settle for an Ultrarunner meet up next week. I need to find those ultra bloggers.
I wear the shirts if I volunteered and or worked at the event. I never would have until I started my job in the running industry. I put my blood, sweat and tears into those events, even if I am not running them. But, I usually don't get the tech shirts, just our regular t shirts and I just usually wear them around town.
I say go ahead and wear the shirt as long as it's not falsely advertising something you haven't actually done. For example, don't wear a marathon shirt if you've never run a marathon (but if you have, then feel free to wear shirts from marathons you had to DNS). Only caveat- I would never wear a Boston marathon shirt unless I actually qualified for the race (which I haven't). That's sacred;)
Sounds like you have some pretty fabulous friends! : )
Wear it. Not only did you pay for it, you trained for it. It's yours.
You paid for it so you should be allowed to wear it!
1) those are some AWESOME gifts! You're very loved here :)
2) Marlene is coming to the Martian race?! how did I miss this?! FUN!
3) People get WAY too riled up about that kind of stuff. So ridiculous - wear the shirt if it fits and you like it. Don't wear it if its ugly and not a tech-tee. Haha, what's the big deal?! Oof.
umm you should get it b/c you paid for it! duh.
wearing it, yeah that would seem weird, but i know you'd only wear it to train in (i'm assuming it's technical anyway) so i def don't see the big deal there.
I took the swag for Shamrock last year- I just wear the shirt for lounging. I never false advertise! I also took the medal. I did. I don't display it with my medals from finished races but I did take it.
