Necessary Evils

In running, like in life, I've come to find that there are a handful of necessary evils. A few examples being:

  • Hill's: Y'all should know my motto by now, "Hills are for Hero's!" It's what I chant to myself as I fight up yet another repeat each and every week. When I lived in pancake-flat Orlando I resorted to overpass bridges and parking garage ramps to incorporate them into my routine because they make you faster and stronger.

"You can never run a hill too hard, you will collapse before hurting it."

  • Speedwork: Speedwork comes in many torturous forms; intervals, tempo, pace, etc... whatever you call it, hitting the puke threshold is the single best way to get fast! Even incorporating a few fartleks can get you started at chipping away your race times.

"If you don't feel like you're going to throw up you're not running fast enough."

  • The Foam Roller: Who knew a foam cylinder could simultaneously cause you tear jerking pain and euphoric release?!?! Investing in one of these babies changed my life and I use it every single day to work out all my various tight muscles, knots, etc... I often joke I have a date to make sweet love to my foam roller because you can literally roll your entire body out on this thing!

    "Hurts so good!"

  • The Stick: Much like the foam roller, but more importantly, it gets at the really deep knots that lodge themselves in your muscles. While extremely effective I find it hard to really get the most out of this thing because I can't bear the pain I'm causing to myself. Anybody else ever feel this way with this thing?

  • Massages: Wait, did I just loose some of you on this one?!?! I'm sure many of you are thinking, "But I LOVE massages, they are the greatest thing since Arctic Ease!!!" And typically speaking I would agree with you but if you're cursed with extremely painful calf knots that build up like plague on your gum line, you find yourself impatiently dreading a massage.

And that is exactly what I was doing Saturday morning after my long run... but I get ahead.

See Thursday after my pace workout I began to notice the unmistakable pain of calf knots. I'm no stranger to calf knots, I experienced them at the tail end of my first marathon training cycle, during most of my second, and they started the derailment of my defunct third. I immediately started fretting, stretching, icing, compressing, sticking, foam rolling, you name it! Anything I could think of but by Friday afternoon I was pimp-limping and fearing the worst... when I thought to book a calf massage. I spent the rest of the day in my compression sleeves, doing all the previously listed every few hours and when I woke up Saturday morning I felt slight relief but knew I'd be feeling them during the run. I ended up making it through just fine, I think fighting the wind helped me keep my mind off them, but afterward they were screaming and I impatiently dreaded my massage...

Within a few seconds of feeling up my right calf, the one that was really plaguing me, the sports massage therapist let's me know it was going to take more than a half hour to get me worked out... and for the next hour, 45 minutes of that on my right calf alone, I laid face down, tears streaming down my face, doing breathing exercises to stop myself from passing out from the pain, grunting "OMG!!!", as he got every last, horribly painful, deep rooted knot out. I limped in and walked out. My calves are bruised from the experience but I can run pain and knot free. A necessary evil (and unexpected expense) that I think might be making a regular appearance in my training regimen.

What necessary evils are a part of your training regimen? Do you regularly get sports massages? Have you ever had an ART massage?

On an unrelated note:

Anniversary Contest: Of those of you that guessed on my anniversary post Saturday, I had written 355 posts so both Nelly & Kevin win a little something since they guessed 350 & 360 respectively. Please email me your mailing address and I'll drop a little something in the mail for both of you.

I make my trainer "stick" me. He leaves me bruised and near tears, but oh man, it's worth it.

I haven't had a massage in almost a yr. I could use one I'm sure. My calves have always been a prb for me.

LOVE my ART. ...and the fact that I can't find my foam roller or stick, is killing me!!! can someone tell me how you lose a foam roller? I guess if anyone could do it, i could. geez....

Thank you for reminding me of my stick and foam roller; let the torture commence!

I'm a lover of graston these days but it sure hurts like hell when they are doing it! Hope your calves feel amazing soon!

I love your quote at the end of hills, definitely one to remember.

Woohoo!!! I winned! :)

I love/hate the foam roller and the stick. Never done a massage though. They had a couple of ART guys in the transition tent at IMWI last year when I was volunteering. Every person they worked on left feeling like a new person. It must really work.

Your massage reminds me of a comment my buddy Jon made on another blog (http://mattheworavec.blogspot.com/2011/02/swimming-healing-and-responses-to.html?showComment=1297956322332#c2887290688538324224).

Ah .... The Stick. Love/hate that little bastard. That thing saved my training for my first marathon, but man does it hurt. I've never gotten a full-on muscle-grinding massage. Honestly, too cheap to invest in one, but I probably need to give it a shot.

another great post, I agree with everything here! I love your manta of Hills are for heros, haha And a 45 minute massage on just your right calf? That sounds brutal!

I love the foam roller too, the main thing I use it on is my ITB to prevent any pain before it happens, but I might try using it on other muscles too...

I love using the foam roller on my tight calves. I dont know if Im using right, but it just feels so good.

Went to my chiro today for my ART session. I felt a little pull behind my knee during Saturday's world breaking run (LOL!) and so today popped in there and feel 100% better.

All of those things I look at with love b/c I know they will make me better.

I have been through therapy over the use of the foam roller. I hate it and really hate it, but know that I need it in order to prevent any future injuries.

I have a first date with ART next Wednesday. We will be working on my hip. I am afraid of the pain that it will entail....

Never had a massage but want one sometime after my marathon.

I've been doing AET every few weeks for the past 6 months. My foot is healing really well because of it, but OMG the pain. But I know I'm healing because it doesn't really hurt any more, though I don't think it'll ever feel goo.

For me, it's running every day. I'm a streak runner, so today was my 724th consecutive day of running at least one mile each day. I never TRULY feel rested, but one mile days are my rest days.

OKAY.

i'm not doing hillwork right now which makes me a damn sissy, but i'm gonna pretty soon or my half M is gonna eat my face off.

my PT does "manual therapy" and it's basically the worst pain on earth. i don't even have the strength to cry i just lay there and my eyes leak.

ALSO i think i'm going to do all 16 with you.

ALSO i make sweet sweet rolling love to my foam roller all the time, that stud.

ALSO if this doesn't make any sense it's because i'm celebrating with vodka while my husband snores, LAME.

i think that's enough alsos, hugs to you girlie! see ya soon!

Here I was all ready to make a funny comment about how my necessary evil is doing long runs and Chip has to go and show me up by not only saying running, but also being some sort of amazing streak runner.

Fine Chip, the first round goes to you. Just know that my streak running more closely resembles the movie Old School.

Thanks so much for this post! Calf knots and pimp limping (haha!). That's exactly what I've got right now. Thanks for the reminders of how to handle it. I don't want to get derailed to far off my training plan.

I agree, sport's massages: evil....evil...evil... Or 'tough love' as I like to call those. But boy, do you feel good afterwords!

I was just in to see my masseuse last Tuesday. She does a lot of work on the Hanson's runners and can fix my hamstrings and quads like nobody's business. But, my God does it hurt! I also have 2 different types of foam rollers that I try to use on a daily basis.
Good luck with all that training and we are going to ROCK the Rock and Roll Cleve. Right after we visit Mars...

Jim ... 50after40 said...

Agree with all of them. My foam roller hurts me, but it has made me better than ever.

Jamoosh said...

I thought there were going to be necessary evils listed in this post? WTF? Hills - love them. Speed work - fun, plus I ran a marathon PR without a lick of speed work. Stick and foam roller - look forward to them after my runs!

Jenny and I both had A.R.T. massages a few weeks back. The problem is for it to be effective we both needed repeat treatments and the A.R.T. guy moved to NY the next week. There's no one else nearby so we're back to getting sports massage therapy and the new thing... chiropractor college clinic.

"Pimp limping" - Classic.

Glad you got it worked out. I'm a punk when it comes to deep massages. Sounds like you were a trooper. Good stuff!

That damn foam roller must have been originally invented as some kind of cruel implement of torture. But man, does it hurt good.

I've had ART..I bruise easy so I looked like I had been in a fight post treatment. I ice bath and stretch regularly...though nowhere near what I should. New goal this week of foam rolling....

My calves always get the most thorough beating when I go for deep-tissue massage at physio... holy *&%^#* it freaking kills, but does it ever work! Glad you got it taken care of!!!

I could have an all-day massage on my shoulders. I get the worst knots there! Hello? Do you not watch price-is-right? Closest guess without going over... That 360 is NOT a winner, especially if it's Kevin.

Emily said...

is it sick that I consider NONE of those necessary evils but all part of my true love for running?

if I could bear them, ice baths would definitely be on my list of necessary evils but I'm too much of a wimp.

The Happy Runner said...

I don't consider any of them evils, either! (Like Emily) Ha!

I love the stick. Love hills. Love the foam roller. Kinda like speedwork -- at least the feeling that comes after finishing it! LOVE massages!

Running Down a Dream said...

I thought of your blog quote "If you don't feel like you're going to throw up you're not running fast enough." today during my run.

I ran faster and felt like vomming. Success? I think so. At least I am pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone.

Aron said...

ART is definitely a necessary evil and I think the calves are one of the most painful spots to get it done - OWIE!

drdave said...

ART or Active Release Technique is not a massage. It is a soft tissue mobilization technique that strips adhesions that have formed between the muscle fibers due to injury (mostly overuse or aberrant motion from improper biomechanics). Dr Leahy would not approve of his technique being referred to as "massage".

You are so much stronger than I am!!! If I would have been in your massage appointment I would have D-I-E-D. You are one tough chick!

Thanks for your comment on my fall/knee situation!! I feel like such a wuss, but it really hurt!

I run with the Track Shack training program in O-Town still and we run on brick roads in Winter Park that have good hills because they are around an old sinkhole.

Heather @ Dietitian on the Run said...

Oh girl, I can only imagine how painful that hour was...I'm proud of you for taking that extra step though! D has given me a calf "massage" before and I was in tears...it is NOT fun to get those knots out! But, necessary. :)

My necessary evils list is short - speed work and giving up some weekend plans to get in good early morning Long runs! Ha, I like to keep things simple. And I actually Love running hills...so I embrace the "challenge" ;) (call me crazy)

sunapeegirl said...

I used to agree with you on the foam rolling thing, but now I do it every day and don't ever let myself skip it and it doesn't hurt anymore, just feels good : )

Lisa said...

The foam roller. It hurts so good!! I have speedwork on my schedule for tomorrow. Not sure how it's going to go on a treadmill. Hmmm.

I've never had an ART massage but have heard great things.

I'll have to remember that "If you don't feel like throwing up you're not running fast enough". hehe. Very evil.

Have you ever done Graston? That will make the stick seem like your best friend. Graston might be the devil but it feels so damn good!

Holy crazy massage. Glad it worked though. And all those things are part of my training, except massage. I'm too cheap I guess =)

The Shabby Princess said...

Gah. The massage. I try to go in every could of months just to work everything out and holy moly, I'm usually crying and about to pass out. The last time I got a massage (after my failed trail ultra) I had bruises after it!
