You've got a Friend in me...

When I started this running nonsense I was terrified to approach a running group because that meant I had to potentially talk with other women. This seems like a rather odd fear but the simple truth of the matter is this; Women are not very nice to other women.

Or at least this was my experience. Women by nature judge each other. Upon meeting another woman, a woman or group of women size you up. It's very intimidating. In social settings I am petrified when I have to interact with other women because I worry they will have a prejudice against me before I ever even open my mouth. Because of this fear I either a.) Try to be as overly friendly as possible, thereby sealing my fate as "that girl"; the peppy, annoying one or b.) become a wallflower and count down the minutes til I can escape. *sigh* I can never win.

Or at least I felt like I could never win until I started running. After running with the BRA B.o.B forced me to talk to a running group here in Orlando last year. Since then I have ran off and on with a coed group, a group devoted completely to women and have had multiple blind running dates with other women and do you know what happened??? All these women I met have have been so.frigging.nice. For once, I did not feel judged or sized up at all. We shared a common interest and therefore a common bond. Conversation flowed like a faucet and at first glance one might mistake us as long time friends. Running has so many wonderful health benefits as we all know, but it also has another, rather unexpected benefit;

It's helped me be a better person.

I had always fancied myself a fairly approachable person but since these interactions with virtual strangers I have really assessed my own behavior in social settings and make it a point to extend my hand and smile to other women. Sure not every scenario ended in making a new friend, but at least I put myself out there and stayed true to myself. So what if I'm the peppy annoying girl, at least I own it now.

I've had this post sitting in my drafts for awhile now and lately with bloggy blind running dates at an all time high, thought I'd pass along my thoughts and see if any of you have felt the same. So spill it... have you? If you've gone on one, how did your first blind running date go?

A Run filled weekend...

Hola peeps! How goes it?!?! Did ya'll have a great weekend? I def did, got a lot of running in and got to catch up with quite a few old friends that I haven't seen in awhile but it just went by entirely too fast!
Friday: My first attempt at speedwork in almost a year. Coach EK said if I want to PR the B.A.A. 5k I gotta get in some intervals so after work I headed over to the track. 6 x 400 and it was Game On! Came in a few seconds under plan each interval and only wanted to die the very last one. SUCCESS!!! After I got cleaned up I met up with my girls; Ebs, Rixy, Beaker Luv and Jamie for yet another girls night on the porch. I am loving all this girl time lately but I stayed up way too late... as in 5am late just chatting on the porch, catching up... Whoops!
Saturday: One would think after staying up so late and having a few too many adult beverages that running would be the last thing on deck but the long lost Lazy Runner had wanted to get together for a run so up and at 'em and over to Windermere I went bright and early Saturday morning. Those not familiar with this part of Orlando, which means pretty much all of you, should know that this place is unbelievably gorgeous. I mean this is where the infamous home of Tiger Woods is after all, you know the one that he got the beat down from his wife at... Any way, we met near the town square on Main St. turned on the Garmin and just ran around; here, there, everywhere... No agenda whatsoever. Just running, enjoying the views and catching up. At one point we saw this enormous house under construction and decided to run through it. It was unbelievable! I snapped some pics with my phone but being the piece of crap that it is, it didn't save them for some reason. After we ooh'd and ahh'd the house we continued on towards Belle Isle (where the uber rich live) and rounded a corner to see the most breathtaking house ever... and of course LR finds a fence, a barbed wire fence, and we climb under to get a pic of said house... that my phone did not save. It did however save this pic of LR holding the fence open for me. Thankfully no Redheads were harmed during this trespassing.
After that we ran past the main entrance to Belle Isle and LR decides we should try to run in... the security guard thought otherwise and we were immediately kicked out. Oh well, it was worth a shot! LOL! Oh the adventures I have with LR. After he made some faces into the security camera's we decided to call it a run and head back. 4.5 M on a beautiful Saturday morning in Windermere: Run and done!
Sunday: Saturday night I had headed over to Harold's neck of the woods aka NSB so we could run an 8 miler beachside first thing Sunday morning. This was Harold's longest run to date and I was excited to be a part of it! We got up around 7am and headed out. Check this beautiful sunrise we caught at the start of our run:

Harold had mapped out a route that encompassed some beach running (that ended up a FAIL because it was high tide) some dirt roads, trails and the boardwalk loop over the dunes. It was so beautiful and really made me wish I lived closer! We snapped some shots on the boardwalk, I don't know why but I laugh at this pic of me running in my running skirt.
Once we looped back to the car we hit the beach to snap a pic together and then dipped our toes in the ocean. It was so refreshing after such a humid and sunny early morning run! Oh the life of a beach runner!
Congrats to Harold for running his furthest mileage yet AND hitting his first 20 mile week! Woot woot!

So what all did you guys get into this weekend?

3 Things Thursday

  1. Not getting to sleep until well after 2am isn't conductive to getting up at 5am to do intervals. Needless to say they didn't happen this morning. Will now have to switch up my running schedule for the remainder of the week to make these happen tomorrow. FAIL.

  2. Saturday night I'm heading over to New Smyrna Beach (or NSB as we locals call it) to visit my friend Harold (who I've been covertly turning into a runner for the last few months) to log an 8 miler, his farthest to date, Sunday morning beachside!!! I'm super stoked as I haven't hit up NSB since my 18 miler with Tall Guy Surfing well before Chicago. Be prepared for running hijinks and photo fun come Monday.

  3. I can not believe Chicago Marathon registration closed on Tuesday! Holy sh*t! I was seriously debating running this again and figured since it didn't sell out until mid-April last year I still had a lil' more time to commit. Notsomuch. Had I signed up, it would have been the first of two Fall Marathons for me but alas now it looks like one it is. This means that I will now spectate the marathon instead and cheer on all my bloggy friends! Yay! Are you running Chicago? Let me know!

Have a great weekend! Rock those races and long runs! Catch ya'll on the flipside!

Sooo you're saying it went well?

  • Tying my car key into my laces I notice that it's crazy windy in the exact direction I will be starting my hill repeats. Awesome.

  • As I strap Hermes onto my wrist I think to myself, I haven't ran since the Gate River Run... did I charge it afterwards? I would find out that, no I must not have, right about the time I finished my warm up mile.

  • With no Garmin to guide me I grab my cell phone and use the stopwatch function to record my splits. After each repeat I have to slow down to a trot to plug the number into my notebook without the slightest clue how fast I'm really going. I want to die after each repeat.

  • Each repeat is straight into gnarly headwind and because I have no idea how to tell if I'm running the prescribed 7:15 pace I just give it my all and try to stay consistent time wise. I have 3 repeats to do, the first two I'm consistant, the final one I hit the puke threshold and lose 10 seconds.

  • After 7 days of non-running, whose idea was it exactly to jump right into a Hill workout? Mine? Oh... well that's not very smart.

  • After my cool down mile I text Spike this incredibly hot pic of myself, and by hot I mean not.hot.at.all, with the caption:

Todays hill workout looked a lil like this

His reply: Sooo you're saying it went well?

  • Upon return to my house I plugged in the numbers to figure out my pace; 6:49.
    That's not 7:15.

Let's all say it together now... FAIL.

FAIL aside, can I just say I'm so happy to be running again?!? :)

Week O' Xtraining Recap

If I ever needed a week to run it was last week! Seriously. My life got turned completely upside down and yet, true to my word, I stuck with the xtraining (xtraining = cross training for all you perverts out there) as promised.

Here's how it all played out:

Sunday: What better day to start then Sunday, the day of Rest. I did nothing.

Monday: Sleeping in (7am) is great! Spin class @ 6pm with "The Drill Instructor." I've never came so close to crying during a workout in my life. A.G.O.N.Y. I don't know how I made it through the whole class but I did and it made me realize I really need to get back to incorporating Spin into my xtraining days. It hurts so good. I also decided to throw in some stair drills and some core work just for Katie A.'s challenge.

Random: I had to pick The Brunette up from the airport that night and while lapping around MCO waiting for her to get her luggage a SUV stops, 3 men wearing only neon speedos, beads and top hats jump out and go shrieking down the sidewalk of the terminal. W.T.F. Why didn't I have my camera for this?!?!?

Tuesday: Elliptical, 3 sets of leg curls, extensions, presses, core workout and some more stair drills. Soooooooo bored.

Wednesday: As I threw my leg over the spin bike and lowered myself onto the seat I knew it was not going to be a pretty class... Needless to say if you are a FB fan or follow me on Twitter you probably saw me ask if it were possible to damage your lady parts in Spin Class. So painful. So I followed this second class of the week up with... you guessed it; core work and stair drills.

Random: I am seating guests at a window table at my night gig and as I lay down the menu's and look up and out, there are three people; one of whom has his pants down around his knees and is showing the other two his bare @ss, the other two (a girl and guy) are scrutinizing said @ss. The girl is wearing a dress so short that while bent over is also showing her @ss. Now granted it was St. Patty's day and all but it was only 6pm. W.T.F.?!?!? So after I apologize to the guests I'm seating, I head outside and ask the gentleman to kindly refrain from revealing his @ss in front of the restaurant. He apologizes and informs me that he was Irish and this probably wouldn't be his first time dropping his pants that evening.

Thursday: Having forgotten to turn my ringer on after work from vibrate I woke up at 7:41am needing to be at work at 8am. Needless to say there was no time for a morning workout. Rest day it is.

Friday: I had intended on hitting up Spin Class again but decided I wasn't a fan of torture so I opted for some quality time on the elliptical and stationary bike instead, followed by stair drills and core.

After worked I headed over to B.o.B's and had a reunion dinner with my favorite B.R.A. girls. I heart them so much and look... we clean up well!

Saturday: Originally I was going to hit up Bikram Yoga but it was such a beautiful day that The Brunette and I opted to hop on our bikes and ride around town instead. If not for plans that evening I could have easily rode around a few more hours just soaking up the sun!

After the ride I headed over to Beaker Luv's house for a porch night with a few of my fav O-town girls. Baby RJ greeted me at the door with this adorable onesie!! So cute! He just learned how to crawl this past week and was getting into everything!

It reads: First steps today, 26.2 Tomorrow

With the Week O'Xtraining behind me, I now head into the B.A.A. 5k PR training plan! Tonight I revisit an old friend, my "hill" for some speedy hill repeats! Can.not.wait!!!

I hope ya'll had a great weekend too! Will be attempting to catch up on my reader today/tonight to find out...

Flashback Friday

Disclaimer: This is a NON-RUNNING related post but highly entertaining nonetheless. All stories and images are circa 2000-2001. There is a good possibility I will delete this post in the near future for its highly embarrassing content so get it while its hot folks!

EDIT: You snooze you loose.

After my anniversary post there were a lot of questions that needed answering, namely the "window incident" so for your entertainment please enjoy this flashback post; back to the good ol' days of college when I was a very colorful digital media student fresh off the farm from Michigan who enjoyed one or ten adult beverages more than necessary....

And with that I give you: Flashback Friday: Redhead Running "The (Non-Running) College Years"

Question: I'm curious where you came up with the name Beaker Luv? Is it the muppet?

The name is in fact derived from the Muppets! Beaker was a character on the show who had this god awful high pitched voice... much like the voice Beaker Luv and I get when we are excited and drunk. Rixy nicknamed us the Beakers and somewhere along the way we got to calling each other Beaker Luv.

Question: What were the weirdest colors you died your hair? You used to be a raver?

That particular point of Rixy's needs to be clarified. I was NOT, I repeat NOT a raver... I just dressed like one. Gwen Stefani was/is my idol and I LOVED being colorful. I never dyed my hair, I did temporary dye my bangs pink once but mostly I just had a bunch of funky colored hair inserts that I would braid or weave into my hair to match my outfits. Kid you not. Please see exhibits below. And don't worry I am laughing with you...

Beaker Luv & I clearly Beakered

Rixy & I - I loved that shirt like no other

Yup that's SILVER braided in my hair.
Tinsle actually; you know like the kind you put on your Christmas Tree.
True Story.

Question: The window incident? (Collective)

Sorry guys... like I said above, you snooze you loose. Removed for content.

3 Things Thursday

  1. Remember my good friend Insomnia? Well guess who decided to pay me a little visit this week? That post was written almost exactly a year ago and I hadn't ran in 6 days, fast forward to now and it's been 5 days since my last run... I see a trend here. All xtraining + no running = one very distraught, over anxious, insomnia ridden Redhead. 2 more days... I can do this! My body needed this self induced running sabbatical, it WILL thank me for it.... or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

  2. Besides needing to run and sleep I also need structure. I need an excel spreadsheet that tells me what to do every day that I can shade colorfully when I complete a workout. Thank goodness Coach EK has sent me over my next training plan, which starts Monday, to attempt a PR race at the B.A.A. 5k! Do you hear that? That is angels singing Hallelujah... either that or its Beaker Luv because I know she's probably fed up with my non-running/non-sleeping/uber-case-of-the-Lonelies-because-I-have-too-much-time-on-my-hands whining!!!

  3. Weekend O' Festivities: Tomorrow I am heading over to B.o.B's to have a girl's night out! YAY!!! This will be my first non-running related trip over to B.o.B's ever! Can you believe it? Saturday I head back and will be ending my Week O' Xtraining with a Bikram Yoga class with The Brunette... not going to lie, I'm a little nervous about that one. *Fingers Crossed* After Bikram I'm headed over to Beaker Luv's for some quality and adult beverages on the porch. I'm in serious need of all this girl time and I can't friggin' wait!

What are ya'll getting into this weekend???

Alright that's it for me, stay tuned for a Week O' Xtraining Recap sometime this weekend and next week we're back to business as usual around here... which means RUNNING!!!

If you have a chance, don't forget to tweet your vote: @dickssportcmo I nominate @RedheadRunning for the #startinglineup because (insert randomness here)

Thanks ya'll! Catch ya on the flipside! xoxo :)

Gate River Run 15k Race Recap

Race Eve: Friday night I arrived in St. Augustine (after getting myself lost first) and was greeted by the hostess with the most-est; Christy from It Just Looks Like Slow Motion. She had gone all out and prepared a 4 star pasta dinner complete with bottled water and afterwards we took her pup for a walk and just chatted each other's ears off about life, nerding out about running, *gross things girls most certainly do not do prior to running* and our men... eventually we had to make ourselves go to bed because we were basically giggling like school girls at a slumber party.

Pre-Race: 5 am bright and early we were up and at 'em, got ready and then were out the door to pick up her friend Corrina and head over to Jacksonville to PR the Gate River Run 15k! With her insider knowledge, Christy got us to the race early enough to avoid the inevitable crazy race traffic and we pulled into the parking lot outside of the Jaguars Stadium with plenty of time to spare. Once we were geared up we headed over to the Finish Line to snag a pic and then lucked out and found no lines at the Porta-potties. Sweet!

Start Corral: Because we had FAIL'd to notice that she could qualify for seeded corral placement we were stuck in open corral with the general population. We passed the time amusing ourselves with people watching, snapping a few pre-race shots and fighting the urge to give into the nervous pees. Nerves were a little high because Christy was shooting for a PR (my ultimate job as pacer to help her achieve) and it was Corrina's first time running a 15k. (Guaranteed PR!) I reassured them both they'd do great and for added measure I reassured them some more!

Ready to rock this 15k!

Start to 5k: It took us about 2 minutes to cross the start mats and once we had I was surprised at how speedy we were going. I had figured on us getting caught up in the inevitable cluster f*ck that is the start of a race so I had strategized us to take the first 2 miles conservatively... except we were speeding along at pace almost instantly! I credit this to having the entire width of Bay St. at our disposal. Despite this though, not even a few minutes into Mile 1 this giant of a guy trips up on the middle line reflectors directly in front of us and eats it like you wouldn't believe, almost taking a few other runners with him. It was luck alone that we avoided the pile up and our hearts skipped a beat when we watched him simultaneously hit his head while sliding across the pavement. His friends and a few runners that were in his immediate fall area helped him to his feet but we're both pretty sure there's no way he could've finished the race. Ouch. :(

Mile 1 breezed by and into Mile 2 we passed this lady that looked so much like Betty White I go to comment on it and Christy finishes my sentence! LOL! That kept us giggling as we approached the first bridge, the Main Street Bridge, that runs over the St. John's River and into Mile 3.

Bridge #1 - Main Street Bridge

From 5k to 10k: We crossed the 5k mark right on schedule and shortly thereafter ran a brief stretch along the river where the view and breeze were amazing and we were equally amazed to see not only a "Mimosa Station" set up but also spectators handing out Dunkin Donut holes to the runners! LOL! As we headed into Mile 4 and through a beautiful historic looking neighborhood Christy took advantage of a woman using her hose spraying runners. Then we saw a Hillary Clinton look alike which caused us to giggle straight into Mile 5. Between the random sightings, our constant chatter and the awesome bands playing along the course we were definitely entertained but by this point we were also feeling the heat, (Read: Hot, Sweaty Messes) struggling to keep the pace and as a result Christy tried to trip me!!! (J/K it was an accident but would've made a funny story) Turning on to Beach Blvd a woman pushing a jogging stroller with her toddler in it totally smoked us and we both just shook our head in amazement. That gets the Hardcore Stamp for sure! As we trudged on trying not to melt on this completely exposed stretch along a busy thoroughfare we came up on Mile 6 and celebrated only having a 5k left to go!

From 10k to 15k: We finished up 10k still looking good time wise but Christy was struggling and nervous about the impending Mile 7 stretch and beyond that, the infamous Hart Bridge. I wasn't too worried about Mile 7 but I was anxious about the bridge too and admitted as much. As we wound through another gorgeous neighborhood we saw a man dressed as a Banana handing out Oranges and people handing out ice pops before turning onto Atlantic Blvd and into Mile 7. I quickly put my Peppy Pacer Pants into full effect, insisted on more Cowbell from the spectators and chatted away to keep her mind off her nerves and the heat.

Soon enough we were on the ramp up to the Hart Bridge Expressway and beginning our climb of the bridge... I'm not going to lie, it was a monster of a bridge! Much higher and far more steep then the one Jill & I tackled during the Donna Half but at least this time I was ready. I had given Christy a few pointers on tackling it without burning herself out and told her not to let me get more than a runner ahead of her. I felt great and I was hoping my energy could pull her up...

Just follow the pig tail nubs Christy!!!

We plugged in our iPod's and homed in on making it to the top. I was rocking out, enjoying the view and keeping Christy in my peripheral. Before long we crested and having done so achieved her first goal of the day: not walking the bridge! SUCCESS!!!

A very happy Christy after OWNING the bridge!

That really boosted her confidence and we settled in to coast the downhill. Check this awesome shot I snagged of the runners heading towards the Finish Line at Jaguar's Stadium:

Christy: Oooo go right there and take a pic! Hurry!
Morgan: OK! (Darts in front of runners to snap perfect shot)

As we passed the Mile 9 marker we only had .3 to go! Spectators lined the street on both sides but were lackluster at best (Seriously, what is up with the lackluster Finish Line crowds lately?) and I knew she was really putting her all into it. I did my best to keep her going strong without causing her to hit the puke threshold. We soared into the Finish Chute, grabbed each other's hands and crossed the Finish Line with huge grins on our faces knowing we had accomplished the second and most important goal of the day: 15k PR!!! PACING SUCCESS!!! Go tell her Congrats HERE!

15k PR's for All!!!

Post Race: After we rounded up Corrina (she totally killed it too!) we headed over to the Post Race Party to gather up some eats and H2O before heading back to the car. Once we were all situated we settled in for the drive back and I decided to review the pics we had taken along the way... And that is when I realized I was unknowingly the victim of unfortunate sweat patterns and Christy was a bad friend! Real Runner Friends tell their friends when they're running in shorts that give them unfortunate sweat patterns!!! Readers be warned, not only did she not tell me this horrible situation was occuring, but she proceeded to take action shots of me from behind that documented it! Needless to say I put my cropping skills to use on the bridge shot above so you wouldn't be subjected to the FAIL that was my new green shorts. Bad Christy!!! :P (Truth be told its not like telling me would have made a difference during the race but still!!! LOL!)

Post Race Thoughts: First and foremost I can not say enough how much I love running with friends and especially at races! Christy is such a doll, loved her and loved running with her! I had so much fun giggling it up pacing her and would do it again in a heartbeat! (If she lets me of course!) I really hope she makes it down for the 5k I talked her in to joining me to run next month!

The course itself was so picturesque and only had a few stretches that were lackluster; It started at the Jaguar's Stadium, wound thru downtown Jacksonville, over and along the St. Johns River, through some gorgeous neighborhoods before wrapping around to run the Hart Bridge back over the river to finish at the stadium. Overall I just kept commenting how beautiful and what a great course it was. The distance itself was awkward to me, as it was my first time, but by the end I was digging it. Initially I wasn't sure how to strategize for it and had I been racing rather than pacing I'm not sure how my time would've ended up; I hit the bridge wanting to charge it but had I been racing prior I might not have had as much energy by that point. I would def run this course again and suggest it to others. My only real complaint was that an 8:30 am start time was WAY too late for a race here in Hades. The day itself was BEAUTIFUL but had we of started earlier we wouldn't have caught so much beat down from the sun and would have crushed her PR by even more but all things considered I think we did excellent and I'm so proud of her! We have a speedy runner in the making here folks!

With that I have a new distance raced, another running friend paced and will head into the Week 'O Xtraining basking in the after glow (or maybe that's just the sunburn) and hoping it tides me over...

15k Run & Done!

3 Things Thursday

  1. Tomorrow I head up to Jacksonville to crash with Christy in preparation for the Gate River Run on Saturday! Yay!!! I can't wait to nerd out about running with her again and everyone keep your fingers crossed that I pace her to a PR as promised!

  2. This week Track Shack is hosting their annual Spring Sale and everything in the store is 20% off! EVERYTHING! Do you hear that O-town peeps? Get yourselves over there ASAP for some sweet deals. I scored me a new pair of kicks (Asics GT-2150's) for $80. Hell's yeah! I can't wait to break them in for the next training cycle, I swear they are trying to lure me into another cycle right now... I won't do it!!! Back in your box til its time!

  3. With the Week O' XTraining on deck for next week I'm just prewarning you that ya'll probably won't hear much out of me. You can count on a race recap and 3 Things Thursday (As if I'd miss one! I created 3 Things Thursday!) but that's probably it. No running = no material. I mean do you really want a play by play of my 45 minutes on the stationary bike? "So I kept on pedaling... and pedaling... and pedaling..." Yeah not nearly as exciting as all my running tales so I'm counting on ya'll to keep me entertained as I live vicariously through your running. Don't suck. :)

Rock those races and long runs this weekend, I hope more beautiful weather is coming your way! Catch ya'll on the flipside of my first 15k pacing attempt!

Post Marathon Runs & Plans

It has been well over a week since Gasparilla and things couldn't be better. I recovered quickly and other than a lingering dull ache below my right calf all systems are go!

RUNS:

Wedesday 3/3 - 2 M / 9:30 P - Just a nice and easy jaunt around the neighborhood with my trusty bike pacer, The Brunette, I felt great and for having just ran a marathon a few days prior, you'd have never known. Post Marathon Run #1 = Success!

Thursday 3/4 - 3 M / 8:46 P - Mile 1 was ran with Spike (Thanks for purposely making me step it up. What part of "Recovery Pace" didn't you understand!?) and I had my first encounter with ICE; I tiptoed over it like a sissy and he barreled thru it like a man on a mission. We parted ways just after that mile and I rounded out the final 2 solo. While I did slow it up some, I mostly just kinda zoned out and ran. It still ended up being much faster than recovery pace... whoops. Post Marathon Run #2 = Success!!

Saturday 3/6 - 6 M / 8:19 P - With a 15 mile training run on deck, Spike sent me over to the Lansing River Trail by my lonesome for my 6 miler with a few notations "go right around the building when the trail seemingly dead ends, left at the fork by Sparty etc..." and off I went on my own little running tour of the MSU campus. It was a beautiful day, easily the most picturesque day Michigan has ever offered up during one of my visits since moving away back in 2000. I paid no attention to Hermes and just ran by feel. I felt good. I took in the views, enjoyed the sunny day, waved at the few runners I came upon and when I arrived back at the MAC I was pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly the 6 miles had ticked off and at such a speedy pace! Post Marathon Long Run = Success!!!

Monday 3/8 - 3 M / 9:28 P - Another nice and easy run with The Brunette to start off the week. Commence Base Maintaining.

PLANS:

Everyone has been asking me, what's next? Well for starters, this weekend I'm headed up to Jacksonville to pace Christy to a PR in the Gate River Run 15k. I'm super stoked about not only pacing but also to enjoy another fun run with a bloggy buddie. I've never ran a 15k before so I'm also pretty stoked to put a new distance on my race belt. The Gate River Run draws a HUGE crowd and boasts being the largest 15k in the U.S.!

After this weekend I've promised Spike I'd take a bit of a running sabbatical since I haven't taken one since... um, well since before Chicago training started last May/June! So next week I am going to keep the running shoes shelved and hit the gym/bike for some quality cross training. I'm well overdo for some non-running and this will also help me take it easy on The Brunette as I get her started on training for her first 5k next month! Yup, you heard right, The Brunette is about to toe her first race line! Yay! I'm so excited for her and have promised to run (and walk if needed) alongside her every step of the way! Stay tuned for training progress and the race recap come April 24th!

The weekend prior to the 5k with The Brunette I will be heading up to Boston with Spike to spectate him in the Boston Marathon; I am beyond stoked! I get the rare opportunity to get caught up in the excitement without ever having to toe the line and I can't wait to soak it all up! Added Bonus: quite a few of the B.R.A. peeps are running it so Spike is getting quite the First Boston experience. I can't wait to cheer my full head off for him and give him the biggest Finish Line kiss ever once he crosses!!! Sorry, uber schmoopy but I'm just so proud and excited for him.

He recently forwarded me some official race participant info and I noticed there was a 5k on Sunday and guess who gets her own little piece of Boston action?!??! I do, I do!!! Sunday April 18th I am confirmed to run the B.A.A. 5k! Huge thanks goes out to Spike whose only response to my "do you mind if I run it?!?!" was "just as long as you don't expect me to!" I love having a running boyfriend. :)

Further than April I don't have much on my racing calendar. I plan to continue maintaining my base; I'd like to keep my weekly mileage between 15-25 miles and maintain a solid 10+ mile base for long runs. Looking out into the Fall season I have my eye on a marathon... or two... so marathon training cycle #3 will commence sometime in June/July but I'm not committing anything here in writing until I'm sure. I do know that if I decide on a certain one in October a whole lot of you would be very, very happy... but that's all I'm saying. ;)

Back to Reality after Spikeville

Guess who's back?!? Back again!

After 5 glorious days of sleeping in (7 a.m. wa-hoo!!) eating my weight in Reese's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, traversing the state meeting friends and each other's families, taking a running tour of the MSU campus via the Lansing River Trail (alone mind you, because my selfish boyfriend couldn't slow down for me, geesh you'd think he was training for Boston or something?!?) moonlighting in quiet coffee shops gazing schmoopily into each other's eyes, I am back from Spikeville and faced with reality once more. *sigh*

You know your boyfriend is a runner when...

Spike: There's something different about you...

Me: Yeah? *Waits for the obvious hair comment*

Spike: You have this sub 4 hour Marathon Glow about you!

Me: LOL! So do you like the hair?

Spike: I love the hair.

I love him.

It was a perfect weekend and just makes me miss him so much more. Two months was too long and its safe to say we will never let that much time elapse between visits ever again! Now that I'm back I've got a sh*t ton of posts to catch up on so bare with me folks; I can't wait to read all the Disney Princess Half recaps and I've got some post-marathon thoughts/plans to catch ya'll up on. Stay tuned...

2010 Gasparilla Marathon Race Recap

Disclaimer: Settle in kiddies this is a long one filled with pics and stats (yay for Garmins)...

Official Stats:

Clock Time: 3:57:53

Chip Time: 3:56:11

Overall Place: 534 / 2089

Gender Place: 127 / 852

Division Place: 22 / 126

Pace: 9:00

(Garmin Stats: 26.38 M / 8:58 P)

Race Eve: Race eve was spent in a self induced panic that left me with absolutely zero sleep. Not even a single wink. I just tossed and turned and laid there with my eyes closed resisting the urge to check the clock. When the alarm finally went off it was almost a reprieve...

Pre-Race: Race morning B.o.B & I got ready for the race amidst looks of sheer panic. We were both Nervous Nancies x1000... Once we were geared up and ready to go we headed over to Target to Car Pool over with P-Funk, Hollster and the Captain. Everyone was a bit punch drunk and it really helped lighten up the mood, if only for the moment...

We got to the Convention Center fairly early and went in to meet up with the rest of the B.R.A. pre-race. Nerves were high, bladders were nervous and everyone had that look of a deer in headlights on their faces. I shot Sam a "Good Luck" text and told him I'd meet him at the Finish. Coach EK came over to me at one point and gave me a talking to; "You've trained well, you've got this, believe in yourself!" Everyone was reassuring each other and offering support and before we knew it, it was time to head over to the Start.

Start Corral: B.o.B & I headed over to the Finish Tent area to drop our bags while Hollster & P-Funk headed over to the car to get Hollster's bib. We thought they'd be coming back to the tent to drop their bags so we hung out for a few and I peed one last time. By this point it was closing in on Start time and nary a Hollster or P-Funk was in sight. We were a little stressed and knew we had to get over to the Start. We cut through with Pete, Speedy Jess's BF who'd be running the 4 hour group with me, and split ways. I gave B.o.B a reassuring hug and hoped/prayed she'd find P-Funk in the Corrals. Pete and I jumped the fence to get in behind the 4 hour group and searched desperately for Captain and Hollster. We finally spotted Speedy Jess flagging us from the other side of the Corral and we weaved through the crowd to her just in time, finding Captain and Hollster waiting. Finding them was such a relief and within moments we were off! 26.2 here we come!!!

4 Hour Group moments before the Start - Looking petrified!!!
(Hollster, Pete, Captain & I)

Start - Mile 5: (Dedicated to those of you who parted with your Starbuck's for the day and donated a Fiver to Operation Jack - Thank you!)

The first mile was the usual bottle neck, cluster f*ck. We kept the 4 hour pace leaders sign in our sights and each other no more than a runner away. As we got to Mile 2 the pace leader shot off to make up lost time, the Captain followed suit but Pete, Hollster and I decided we would run the pace we intended; 9:10 for a 4 hour marathon finish. We knew we'd meet up with them again further down the road and we'd still be running strong as opposed to burning ourselves out early on. The next few miles ticked off fairly easy on Davis Island as the sun came up. It was warming up to be a BEAUTIFUL morning (it was about 40* at the start) and I ditched my gloves after we Gu'd at Mile 5.

(9:57, 9:08, 8:53, 9:03, 8:58)

Miles 6 - 10: (Dedicated to those of you who donated a Tenspot to Operation Jack - Thank you!)

Leaving Davis Island we head back into Tampa and past the Finish Line. Soon my friend, soon, I will see you again... Passing the finish line we headed up a bridge and Pete tells me to hold my horses as I charge up pulling them along much faster than we needed to be. It was still early and there was no need to be getting crazy! I mentally committed to being better about monitoring the pace and keeping it steady from there on out.

As we veered past the Convention Center we spotted Speedy Jess & Speedy McSpeederson snapping pics just before we split from the Halfers into downtown, we are all smiles and spirits were high. Thru downtown I got to see Tampa up close and personal and enjoyed the view. The elite's start zooming past going in the opposite direction and we got to see Josh, an extremely fast B.R.A. runner, flash by like lightning! (He would go on to run a 2:42 for a 14 min PR) A few minutes later I spotted Sam by his shirt and I shouted over to him to keep it up and "GO Operation Jack!"

Just before splitting with the Halfers

As we came up on Mile 8 we see a radioactive-yellow shirt and jester hat waiting on us... It's Coach Tom and he jumped in to pace us through to the Finish. We were excited and he was camera happy. I took my first e-cap and we began hitting every water stop, if only for a sip of water. It was still pretty chilly, especially in the shadows of the buildings, I was regretting dumping my gloves and although we didn't feel like we were sweating I could already taste the salt on my skin. As we looped the turn-around at Mile 9 I spotted B.o.B and she was running strong but alone, she never did find P-Funk and I could tell she was frustrated. (I said the first of many prayers for my Boo that she would have a great race...) Not far behind her we saw P-Funk and let her know B.o.B was just ahead. I kept my fingers crossed that they'd find each other. Shortly thereafter we get an unexpected surprise: Caribbean Steve!!! We were all so excited to see him and it totally charged us up! At Mile 10 we took our next Gu and brought it back thru downtown Tampa.

Coach Tom leading Pete, Hollster (just behind me) & I with Caribbean Steve

Miles 11 - 15: (Dedicated to those of you who donated $15± to Operation Jack - Thank you!)

Coming out of downtown we ran back through the start area and headed on to Bayshore. The miles passed by quickly and it seemed like after a few short minutes we were crossing the Half mat. I triumphantly shouted out that with that I had officially broken 2 hours on the half with time to spare! (1:58:55 according to the tracker alert) A new Half Marathon PR! I also rejoiced in knowing that everyone tracking me would get the alert that I was right on target for a 4 hour finish!

Shortly thereafter was about this time I realized that I needed to pee. In Mile 14 I broke away to gain some distance on our merry little band and just shy of Mile 15 I zipped into a porta-potty and opened the lid to the most disgusting and mentally scarring scene of my life. I will spare you the details but let's just say I'm lucky I made it out without fecal matter on my person and I have truly perfected the art of hovering. *Shudders in horror*

Having gotten that out of the way I took another Gu as I sped to catch back up with everyone and Coach Tom totally goosed me from behind as I jumped back in with Hollster & Pete. Talk about putting a pep in your step! (Have I mentioned Coach Tom has a harmless Redhead fixation? Don't worry he loves V and she keeps him in line but she lets him have his fun with me when I'm around.)

(8:51, 9:02, 9:03, 9:23, 9:23)

Miles 16 - 20: (Dedicated to those of you who parted with a Jackson for Operation Jack - Thank you!)

Once again I find myself in those crucial miles where you find out what you're made of and whether or not you can hang. As Bayshore turns residential about Mile 17, I spot Sam again, heading towards the finish and I ask how he's feeling, he shouts back "Don't worry about me, go get your time, I'm getting mine!" Once again, seeing him charged me up and reminded me to keep focused. We ran a stretch on brick pavers and my ITB kinda hated me but I had taken a Motrin back on Mile 14 preemptively so I knew once we got back on pavement I'd be ok. As we came up on Mile 18 I took my final e-cap and we could see that we were gaining on the 4 hour pacers and would pass them in due time. As guessed they had lost a ton of runners and we had actually picked up a few of them along the way.

Mile 18 we came into a park that had a narrow trail around a lake and I'm not going to lie, I started to struggle as we rounded it out into Mile 19. For a split second I second guessed myself. It didn't last long and by the time Pete and I strategized the remaining miles, we passed the 4 hour group and I had renewed hope and energy. Go time was just up the street and I needed to stay on task until then. A quick check at my 4 hour pace bracelet let me know we were still on target with time to spare.

Halfway into mile 19 I opted out of taking my last Gu at the water stop thinking I'd take it at Mile 20 but Mile 20 came and went with nary a water stop and for the life of me I couldn't remember where the next water stop was even though we had just done the stretch before the turn around. Right about this time Coach EK jumped in with me and asked how I was feeling and what I was thinking. I let on to him that I was kinda stressed about my Gu situation and he assured me that water was just around the corner. With that fear settled I told him that besides that I was feeling strong and just about ready to make my move. He told me I was looking great and to stay focused before he fell back to check on Pete, Hollster and Coach Tom. Right about then I saw Jamoosh trodding towards the turn around on the other side and waved HI! (It was only after the fact that I realized he wasn't supposed to run the Full and I cursed him out in my head while simultaneously hoping he was running well and would make it to the finish in one piece. What can I say, I'm a stubborn runner too and I can relate.) Not even a few minutes after that I got to see Caribbean Steve again! Yay! I can't tell you how much happier that made me to see so many peeps on that stretch!

(8:49, 8:59, 9:01, 9:13, 9:02)

Miles 21 - 25: (Dedicated to those of you who donated $25± to Operation Jack - Thank you!)

I finally came up on the water stop right about Mile 21 and I took my final Gu. It was officially GO time. I knew Hollster was holding back and running reserved with Coach Tom and Pete had disappeared from my side that last mile so it was just me, myself and I. I took a deep breath, plugged in my ipod and just ran. Not hard (not yet anyway) but just ran.

As I came out of the residential area and back on to Bayshore I was greeted with a mass of spectators. My spirits soared and my legs responded. I could see the stretch of Bayshore wrapping the bay and waaaaaaay down at the end I knew that's where the finish was. I kicked it up a notch and as I passed Mile 22 I had an inner convo with myself/the man upstairs. I thought about how prior to Chicago I thought about never doing this whole marathon thing again, the training was hard on my body and I wasn't sure if it was worth the pain but after Chicago I was hooked and here I was running #2. In that moment I realized I was a long distance runner, I was meant to do this. It only took me training for 2 marathons and running who knows how many miles to realize it. I then asked for some support to keep me going strong and also to help B.o.B, Hollster and P-Funk realize their marathons dreams too. With that out of the way, here goes nothing...

The pack had broken up a ton and I was well ahead of the 4 hour group. I passed a large group of kids cheering and I grabbed a Twizzler from one of them. I tried to eat it but wasn't feeling it so I snacked on two sports beans instead before tossing the bag. I was picking off runners left and right and also catching some nasty head winds. As I came up on Mile 23 Strawberry E hopped in with me and I swear I was never so happy to see someone in my life!!! Although I had rallied with a few runners a few minutes prior and cheered with them to get fired up, it was short lived and I was back to my lonesome after having spent the previous miles with Pete, Hollster and Coach Tom. She told me I was really killing it with my pace and became my sherpa for the remaining aid stations by grabbing me water. As the headwinds picked up she attempted to block them for me and shortly thereafter Navy Steve jumped in with us too and helped. I seriously can not begin to tell you how much having them there that final stretched helped me. I was running hard and I was tired. I was starting to feel like I was loosing it and they kept encouraging me along and helped me keep it together. There aren't enough words to thank them, they were my guardian angels.

As we bared down Mile 25 Navy Steve informed me that we just had to go under two bridges and we'd see the Finish line... Strawberry E reminded me to lengthen out my stride and swing my arms... The spectator crowd grew and multiplied on the sidelines and cheers resounded all around... That last mile hurt, if I ever hit a wall it was that last mile, it hurt so bad and I would never have made it without them.

(8:58, 8:42, 8:47, 8:35, 8:31)

Miles 26 - 26.2: (Dedicated to those of you who donated above and beyond to Operation Jack - Thank you!!! But more importantly to Sam, Jack, my cousin Ashley & Rixy's sister Dani)

The Finish Line. I could see it, I could hear it and I knew Team Redhead and Sam where there waiting for me. After all I had raised for Operation Jack and how far everyone from Team Redhead had traveled to see me finish I had to finish strong. Navy Steve told me to pick off the woman in front of me so I kicked it up, thanked them both profusely and ran my heart out. As I came into the chute I saw Harold with his camera off to the side and behind the fence I heard the screams of Team Redhead. I had a smile cemented on my face as I crossed that finish line knowing I had totally shattered my expected time of 4 hours. Clock time read 3:57, a few seconds after crossing I remembered to stop Hermes and it read 3:56. 12 minute PR!!! Sub 4... CHECK!

(8:31, 8:17)

In the Finish Chute...

Crossing the Finish Line

Finish:
I did it. I broke 4 hours with time to spare. When it sank in emotions took over, they gave me my HUGE medal and when I saw Team Redhead I lost it and started to cry. They had collectively traveled from all over Central Florida just to see me Finish. It meant more to me than they will ever know and I was so thankful to share that moment with them.

THANK YOU TEAM REDHEAD!!! I LOVE YOU!!!

(Harold, The Brunette, Kimmy, Beaker Luv, Ebs, Rixy and Joe)

Post Race: After I collected myself we snapped some shots of the group and with Sam for Operation Jack (Team Redhead all wore Operation Jack shirts in support of the cause. Read Sam's race recap HERE - 3:09 Finish!!!) and then we headed back over to the finish to cheer B.o.B in.

Redhead Running + Operation Jack = SUCCESS!!!

No sooner had I found a spot, I see those yellow shorts barrelling down the finish chute, I checked the clock before screaming my full head off! My Boo was about to totally crush her old Marathon time and looked so good doing it! I screamed on the top of my lungs "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" as she ran by!

We rushed back to the finish area and I got choked up giving her a congratulatory hug. 4:08!!! (Read her race recap HERE) We had done it, we had run our best marathons yet! We headed over to the B.R.A. tent and found Hollster who had finished with a 3:58 for a BQ!!! Hugs & Screams all around and a few minutes later P-Funk walks up sporting a 4:12 after glow for a PR too! Within minutes Captain strolls up with his own PR... (Read his recap HERE)

I love my Boo!

The elusive Captain

Every single one of the B.R.A. members that ran had PR'd!!! Gasparilla had dubbed this the "Final Voyage" for the Marathon as it would be the last year of the Distance Classic and we had all made the most out of our Final Voyage's. PR's for all and a picture perfect race day!

A round of PR's for the best running group a girl could ever be lucky enough to be a part of!!!
I heart you all SO MUCH!

Coach EK - The master mind behind the best sub-4 training plan EVER!
THANK YOU SO MUCH COACH E!!!

We took some more pics, I enjoyed my first after race Shock Top, toasting with Beaker luv and proclaiming it the best Shock Top I had ever had and we all laughed as P-Funk & B.o.B announced they had made Oprah & P. Diddy their b*tches by totally owning their Finishing times. It was a riot and I was still so out of it that pretty much everything was hilarious. I had A.D.D. so bad I couldn't even get myself situated and I gotta thank Team Redhead for their patience as I got myself together. As we headed out after a round of goodbye's and celebatory hugs with the B.R.A. I ran into Jamoosh and congratulated/scolded him on running the full. (Read his race recap HERE)

Post Race Thoughts: I ran parts of this course last year on my first Half Marathon so I was pretty familiar with the course and I was pleasantly surprised at how much more organized and well ran it was in comparison. Its a shame they will be eliminating the Marathon from next years line up because overall it is a very scenic course. Flat and fast, minus Bayshore headwinds. The weather plays a big part on whether or not it's a great day though, last year I had a rough time of it with 40 mph winds and rain. Thankfully this year the weather held up and made for a picture perfect day.

Finish Line at Gasparilla Half 2009;

oh what a difference a year can make...

All that being said I'm sure what ya'll really want to know is how I'm feeling and what I'm thinking now that it's over... Well physically I'm feeling ok, I'm sore but it's the good kind of sore, the sore you earned from running your heart out. I'll take that sore anyday! As for emotionally; I'm beyond overjoyed. I am basking in the after glow of a well run race and I don't have a single regret. I ran this race well and have a ton of people to thank for all the help along the way; namely Hollster, Pete and Coach Tom who stuck with me for the majority of the miles, to Coach EK for everything; from the excellent training plan to the reassuring talks, Caribbean Steve for jumping in on us unexpectedly and helping us find renewed strength and finally to Navy Steve & Strawberry E for being my guardian angels and pacing me into the finish.

My Guardian Angels; Strawberry E & Navy Steve

Huge shout out of Congrats to everyone who raced Sunday and PR'd but extra special Congrats goes to my PR Queens and training pals/gals B.o.B, P-Funk and Hollster. The last 14 weeks of training would never have been as great without you. I'm so happy we all had such an amazing race and got to share in the joy together. I love you ladies!

The PR Queens! B.o.B, P-Funk, Hollster and I basking in the after glow!

Before I sign off I have one final thanks and that goes out to you my dear readers, for all your encouragement, support and comedic relief along the way. From Lam coining the "Gorilla" theme to Run, BlackGirl, Run calling me her "She-ro" ya'll have kept me going with your antics. Thank you for reading along on another training cycle and marathon... ya'll are the best!

Arrrrgh I love me mateys & a sub 4 hour marathon!
