- K-Tape: I have seen and heard of K-tape plenty of times but never used it personally. When I saw that they had reps at the expo I decided to get all the help I could get and told them about my collapsing arches/arch cutlets situation. They listened, looked at my shoes and then told me they had a way to help with that. A few minutes later I was taped up and when I stepped down the lingering aches from my hilly 7 miler on Wednesday disappeared. I wore the tape thru til the race and I'm happy to say it worked great and didn't bother my skin one bit during. When I took it off after the race I actually felt my arches lower and it made me realize I really have to do something about building them back up and strengthening them if I want to get a solid base built leading up to my next Marathon attempt. (Details to come...)
- Race Attire: Race morning I couldn't find my racing sleeves and was worried I'd be cold in just my tank but lo and behold it was a blessing in disguise as I would've gotten way to hot had I have worn them. The kicker was when I got back post-race they were right in my suitcase where I packed them but had somehow overlooked them. Although the temps around here continue to get colder by the day I have realized that I know how to race in the cooler temps and need to trust my better judgment. I simply can't stand feeling constricted in a real shirt and prefer to wear a tank and sleeves instead. When it's cold you know that you will always warm up but when it's hot you just have to pray you get to the Finish as fast as possible. Maybe I will end up enjoying this cold weather running after all? (Well until it snows anyway...)
- Nutrition/Hydration: The aid stations were oddly placed on the course so for the first time ever I raced with my 10 oz Nathan Handheld. I worried it might annoy me, but it was hardly noticeable and came in handy when I wanted to take my Powerbar Gels at exactly Miles 5 & 10. Besides that I really didn't need it and easily could've made do because I was able to grab water at each stop just fine and never felt thirsty between. This race only verified that I am being smart about my hydration and nutrition out on the course and I will continue to stick to this plan of action.
- Xtraining: With everything that happened over the summer with my injury and having to step down from training for the Full and almost not even being able to run the Half I have to say that xtraining saved me. It sucked and there were times I wanted to stab myself in the eye rather than aqua slog another lap but it was worth it. I was able to ramp up quickly once I got running again and was only able to do so because I had maintained a solid fitness base. I know some runners never xtrain and to each their own, but for me xtraining has always been a welcome addition to the training plan and I will continue to incorporate it with each cycle.
- 100%: I was not at 100% on race day. I knew this going in and with only 3 1/2 weeks of training could only realistically hope for a solid Finish. Based on my previous PR of 2:02:30 I knew from those few longer training runs I should easily be able to PR but I had been hoping, wishing and praying I would sub-2. In hindsight had I not have stopped to pee or let myself momentarily give up in Mile 12 I would have broken it and then some but I'm honestly thrilled to have hit it right on the dot at 2:00:22. Going forward I will focus on recovery and establishing a strong, solid base so I can show up to Ragnar in 4 short weeks at 100%.
- Sore: I was and still am very sore. It's a good sore, the kind you earn, but it still makes walking and sitting a little awkward. LOL! I went for a recovery run this morning and was pleasantely surprised at how well it went; I think I can run better than I can walk at the moment!

You did amazing - congrats on a successful race post injury! I am one of those who sucks at crosstraining - not because I don't realize the benefits, but more because I am a poor scheduler of anything besides running. It's definitely on my list of things to work on going forward...
you did great. and i agree about cross training. made a difference in my come-back too
I was way too hot in my long sleeves. I packed sleeves too...no clue why I didn't even think to wear them. So bummed I didn't see you. next time!
You had a great post-injury race :)
K-tape is what got me through tri season post-injury.
I am so impressed with how well you handled your injury and how strong you have bounced back! You are going to go into your next marathon training plan doing everything RIGHT and I know it will pay off big time.
You also DEFINITELY have a sub-2 in you and I know you'll get it next time!
I'm trying to be good about cross training, I don't know why I hate it so much. I'm a huge fan of KT Tape, wouldn't have made it through my marathon without it.
I liked this odds and ends post. I've heard good things about k tape. I guess it's just a matter of being able to put it on yourself, eh? And I suppose doing some exercises to fix the initial problem.
It's amazing how much cross training can do for the bod. I've sort of thought previously that it didn't make much difference in my training and was basically like active recovery. But this time I did more intense cross training during marathon training and it totally helped me!
All excellent points. I used the KT tape before and liked it too. The only problem I had was that it came off due to sweat. I'm not sure they've tested in the Florida heat.
I love that good sore!
The K-tape sounds amazing! Will you want to/be able to tape your arches before longer runs?
I'm glad that the recovery run went well!
The hip is what is weak. Strengthen your hips in order to stop the knee from collapsing and smashing down on the arch. Its totally fixable without pretty tape.
this is creepy. why you gotta be all up in my brain???? :)
seriously, more congrats on both the PR and being back in the game.
I've never heard of K tape?! Clearly it did the trick, though :) Might have to chat you up about these arch-support things, I'm in the Holy-HIGH arches group, too. Luckily I haven't had any issues yet, *knock on wood*.
Congrats, again, on a huge PR and huge accomplishment! :) xo
I used KT tape on a tendon issue last year and it rocks! Glad it helped you cross the finish line with a PR!
And I KNOW you have that sub 2 in you and then some! So excited you're back! All that hard work has payed off!
KT Tape rocks! It totally helped me on the long road to recovery from my Achilles tendon injury. I still wear it on super long runs and in some races as precautionary.
good job on your recovery run! last night i tried to just run like 15 feet to catch up with mr. dawn...and i immediately regretted it!!!
i wore my arm sleeves, and you're right, by mile 10 i was done with them. gloves were gone by 20. it felt a lot warmer than i thought it was going to be.
totally think KT is great stuff. I tried to use it on my achilles, but was putting it on myself...uh pretty hard so it didn't work as well.
i am sore from my new speedwork and you're right it's that happy kind of sore!
k-tape must be what I saw all those people wearing during CM10~! Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience with it.
And the nathan handheld is something I've been meaning to pick up. You're full of good reviews on this post!
Enjoy the good sore & recovery quick!
Awesome!! I personally love K-T Tape. It's the best!!
My knees were K-taped this weekend for the first time ever...and I loved it! The K-tape feels so light and stretchy, but it does the trick!!! :) Great stuff!
So glad that you're back into running again! :)
Yay for learning new stuff........... and it doesn't get much colder up here............. HA
I have super high arches, and they have a tendency to fall when I wear dress shoes non-running shoes, etc. I keep a tennis ball under my desk at work to roll my arch on. It hurts, but the good kind of hurt. :) Might be worth a try. :)
sounds like everything was just about perfect!!! <3
Not bad when you can PR on less than 100%!
I love KT Tape. I was doubtful before I tried it, but now I am a believer!!
I always think that it is so funny when us crazy runners talk about a 'good sore'. People never run have NO idea.
Hey, you know someone else who loves being a redhead? Check out the video to find out! It's a parody video based on Katy Perry's song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWOxdZuSXf8
