Race Eve/Pre-Race - Harold arrived from NSB Friday night and after we grabbed some pizza to carb-load up we hit the hay in preparation for a early morning wake up. Fast forward to 4:45 a.m. and imagine our suprise when the fire alarms in my building went off and pierced our ears for a good 15 minutes! F.O.L!
When it really was time to get up we were up and at 'em and ready to race! We arrived at the Cady Way Park and met up with Robin my running momma from Running Circles around the Turtles, her hubs and a new bloggy friend Lauren of Banana's & Toast! (I loved that she wore her profile running outfit so we'd pick her out, I totally did that my first blog running date too! LOL!) We all chit-chatted and after a few bathroom visits we were headed to the start line...
Start Corral - After wishing the girls good luck, Harold and I made a bee line for the front of the crowd and positioned ourselves a few rows back from the starting line. According to my Garmin and clock time versus chip time it took us all of 3 seconds to cross the mat...
The Race - Because we had dubbed this race a "Duel to the Death" our mission was pretty straight forward; make it to the Finish before the other did and don't hold back. So I didn't. And I smoked him the first mile with a 6:30! Woot! Woot! BUT THEN... not even a minute later as I stepped down something tweaked in my Lankle and it was all I could do to keep moving. I had to stop quickly and shake it out before resuming to limp/run the remaining miles. I lost significant pace but still managed to eek in with a respectable time. At the Finish I learned that Harold totally OWNED me and my PR!!! (That B@stard! It was his first 5k too!)
Mile 2 - 7:52 P
Mile 3 - 8:27 P
.1(7) - 7:24 P
115/970 Overall
Post Race - After I caught my breath and congratulated Harold on his win and new 5k PR we headed back onto the course to find Lauren & Robin to cheer them in. They jokingly called out how much they hated show offs that ran back onto the course and we all had a good laugh. After they crossed the finish line we snapped a few shots, met another local blogger Kitzzy and then Robin headed back onto the course herself to find the hubs.
Robin, Lauren & I sporting some post race *glows*
Lauren, Harold & I before heading back to the Start
After a quick google maps check it was decided that the 3 of us (Lauren, Harold and I) would forgo the smelly buses and just jog back to the start as it was a point to point race. I'm so glad we did because it was a great post race recovery trek back with most excellent company! Lauren is such a sweetheart!
Post Race Thoughts - The Run for the Trees 5k is described as "a run/walk unique point to point event with the last mile on the tree-canopied, wilderness dirt road of Genius Drive. This privately owned glimpse of old Florida is opened to the public only once a year and features beautiful (annoyingly loud and frightened) peacocks. Funds raised from the event support the Winter Park Tree Replacement Fund. The City of Winter Park has historically been known for the canopies of vintage trees that line its picturesque streets and neighborhoods. Unfortunately, almost one-third of the city’s tree canopy was either damaged or destroyed during the hurricanes of 2004."
It was definitely a flat, picturesque course but I wasn't a huge fan of the twists and turns as we zig zagged through the neighborhood. I am starting to think that running fast + turns = ITB & Lankle pain. That notwithstanding, I had a great time was happy to make a new running friend and catch up with old ones and was happy my race fee went to a great cause! Thanks again, as always, Track Shack for hosting another great running event and extra special thanks to Harold for treking over from NSB to school me in the 5k and to the Robin & Lauren for meeting up too!
P.S. I'll get you next time Harold...

Sounds like a good event! My post high school PR in the 5k is nearly the same as what you ran in this race... with a sore lankle. :) You still rocked it.
you totally would have had him! have you had the lankle looked at? and i think i missed what lankle is...is it the same as cankle?
Totally the lankle's fault! You still rocked it though!
You are a racing machine! Sorry about the lankle incident--I'm sure you would've smoked Harold otherwise!
Sounds fun... I was also out-sprinted at the finish of a 5K this week by my GF, and lost by 1 second, but you know, it was awesome anyway! (and I'm sure the "kids with cancer" who we were running for didn't care that I lost by 1 second)
boo to the lankle! you could've owned harold i am sure of it. next time, next time.
Better train hard. Next time, I'll be even faster :D muhahaha
That picture of you is priceless with Harold!! Sorry to hear about your lankle!! You will kiss his a** next time though! Have a great week :)
Sorry about the lankle! But you still brought in a great time.
As always, great pictures. Love your tank and pig tails!
I love a little friendly competition! Congrats all around.
Twists and turns in a 5K are BRUTAL!
Ha, I'm always the first to make bets/challenges with races - things get interesting ;)
great job on a back-to-back 5K, even with Lankle pain, you did great! :)
Sometimes we have to be humbled to run better. You'll get the win and PR next time. Cheers!
haha your face is so cute and sad in the "owned" pic. get him next time!
I love that pic of you being "owned!" You are such a cutie :)
Sorry it wasn't a PR - but you still ran great! Now go and fix that lankie, you got some running to do!
Miss ya and huggs!
What a fun report! I love the first pic of you all defeated and him flexing over you. Don't you just hate boys? They can just bust out a speedy time on their first race without trying. bah!
It was great meeting you. I wish we could have hung out more. I would have loved to run back -- that's what I intended to do -- but I didn't know my way alone so walked back with friends instead.
Tweeked ankle and all GREAT times! Rad Red Hair :)
Did your friend even know that you just ran a 5K PR 2 weekends ago? If he did, he should have given you a 2 minute head start! There should be a re-do!
Anyway, fun times, Redhead! Your race fervor is contagious and very uplifting. Thanks for sharing with us!
You are right - they all can't be PRs - I feel you on that one for sure! Great job on that first mile though. Hope that ankle feels better cause you are speedy!
You always have great race reports! And you are a speedy little thing, even with a lankle to slow you down.
I just went back and read your "You know you're a runner when..." posts. Awesomeness!
Sorry you didn't PR, but sounds like a great race and you have a kick ass tank on. That's all that matters you know. :) You're going to kick Harold's booty next time, I know it!
Sorry about the lankle pain! Great job on the race. It sounds like a fun race.
hi there! how's life?
if you need unique fonts, you can go to our site.
Sorry about the misstep, but sounds and looks like you had a pretty great time!
6:30 first mile huh... that in itself is pretty impressive... and you just started doing speedwork.
Hope your ankle heals up as fast as you run!
nice run even with the Lankle issues! speed and turns mess me up too. esp since im an avid ice skater so i think i need to do 'crossovers' as i turn, but that doesnt work with sneaks....
Loving that top, girl!! Sounds like a great race with the friends...hoping for the best with the lankle, be sending good vibes your way!!
LOL. Awwww, you look so dejected in that first pic.
As always, great to see my favorite redhead running buddy!! Thanks for coming back out on the course and showing us up. hee hee... so sorry about your lankle. :(
HUGS!
