Sooo you're saying it went well?

  • Tying my car key into my laces I notice that it's crazy windy in the exact direction I will be starting my hill repeats. Awesome.

  • As I strap Hermes onto my wrist I think to myself, I haven't ran since the Gate River Run... did I charge it afterwards? I would find out that, no I must not have, right about the time I finished my warm up mile.

  • With no Garmin to guide me I grab my cell phone and use the stopwatch function to record my splits. After each repeat I have to slow down to a trot to plug the number into my notebook without the slightest clue how fast I'm really going. I want to die after each repeat.

  • Each repeat is straight into gnarly headwind and because I have no idea how to tell if I'm running the prescribed 7:15 pace I just give it my all and try to stay consistent time wise. I have 3 repeats to do, the first two I'm consistant, the final one I hit the puke threshold and lose 10 seconds.

  • After 7 days of non-running, whose idea was it exactly to jump right into a Hill workout? Mine? Oh... well that's not very smart.

  • After my cool down mile I text Spike this incredibly hot pic of myself, and by hot I mean not.hot.at.all, with the caption:

Todays hill workout looked a lil like this

His reply: Sooo you're saying it went well?

  • Upon return to my house I plugged in the numbers to figure out my pace; 6:49.
    That's not 7:15.

Let's all say it together now... FAIL.

FAIL aside, can I just say I'm so happy to be running again?!? :)

Running faster than you THINK you are is usually always a WIN in my book. :) Way to go, speedy!

I hate hill repeats. I did them yesterday and they were not fun!

Yeah so you have no right to yell at me when I FAIL by going too fast than what I'm supposed to be doing :)

Running faster is usually good for me : )
Hills are no fun

No Garmin?!?!... I would have turned around right then... and using a cell phone to time your self... What year is this... 2005????

Seriously though... good workout! and I don't really buy into following a prescribed pace for hill workouts (not that its bad to have one for a point of reference)... its really all about building strength, pushing your pain barrier, and perceived exertion... so if you hit the puke threshold on your last repeat that indicates to me that you ran at exactly the right pace!!! No FAIL there...

I didn't jump right into hills (my own version of hell) but I did jump right into speed intervals this morning (a lesser level of hell). And it kicked my @$$! But, don't you feel so freaking awesome for kicking hills? Because I feel kinda badass about the intervals. And now I'm hungry.

Thats a great workout. I can;t bring myself to do hill workouts unless I am training for something and they are on my training schedule. So no FAIL for you -- that's a pass!

Hardcore girly! And that dedication to get your splits down using your cell phone! That is downright crazy hardcore!
Wind is the worse! I battled it yesterday and just like you, for some crazy reason, I ran faster! Hahaha!
You def did not have a FAIL!

Young lady...we need to chat. A conversation, if you will.

Crikey pete, speedy! 6:49 hills would have me puking everything I've eaten in the past year. Maybe my life to date.

Dear Lord you are speedy. Glad to see you running again!

Oh and please do me a favor and don't tie your key to your shoes. What if it gets untied and you lose the key and can't find it? I will personally get you a shoe pouch if I have to.

OK WOW, I can only dream of being able to run that fast! Pass some of that fail my way. ;)

Gah!! damn the hills AND uncharged Garmins! (shakes fist)

at least you stuck it out AND you're back to running ;) whoop!

Jordan said...

On the bright side at least you weren't going slower than you thought! I think that would be like kicking you when your already down!

D10 said...

You were certainly determined to get those repeats done. Great job.

Must be opposite day! Fail means Pass! 6:49 pace is super awesome!!! Sorry you had to puke though, that sucks.

Love the "rat nose" picture. (my hubbs can't stand when I make that face...i.e., "rat nose")

Great job figuring out a way to get it done...in the wind no less.

Yeah! Glad you jumped in feet first to running after your xcross training sabbatical.

Okay, no wonder you were dying if you were chugging along UP A HILL at <7:00!! :)

Welcome back to running, girl!

runblackgirlrun said...

Ok, I know I'm new and all BUT isnt' going faster than you think a good thing?

When will I ever learn? =}

feetinmotion said...

Man that sounds awful! I feel so naked without my garmin! It's a part of me and if it dies, then it's like a friend died! Good job on the repeats though!

J said...

My two least favorite things - wind and hills! No fun! But great job getting out there!!

Lauren said...

Great job!

aron said...

haha well you got them DONE and they were faster than supposed to be... not a fail at all :) but yah, you are a crazy girl doing hill repeats as your first run back!

Jeri said...

isn't it insane how reliant we are on our precious garmins? I know I am. And that wind sounds brutal. blech.

Ashley said...

i always end up going faster than i am suppose too! great job though and without the garmin..wow i'm impressed :)yeah hills after not running..your brave :)

lindsay said...

sooooo. you're saying if you were aiming for a B on a test, but got an A, you'd call that a FAIL?

puhlease whiney pants. you did even better than you were supposed to. no wonder it hurt, duh! :)

MJ said...

this made me laugh. Only you would think that's a fail. :P Way to 'rough it' with your cell.

I love it and this makes me want to run!

Zoë said...

No! Not a fail! I think your outfit gets a WIN in my book...we are Punk Rock Racing hat twins! YAY! :) Seriously, Morgan...when are we going to run together?

X-Country2 said...

I'd take a FAIL like that. :o)

Mel-2nd Chances said...

Damn, I wish I had that problem! Going too fast!! Heehee. Cute pic :)

bill carter said...

Great pic Morgan!! If you keep going that much faster than planned pace, you are going to have to wear one of those fancy weight vests. Or run in boots. Or backwards...

Tara said...

Crap girl. I wish I could have the problem of going faster then I wanted to go. I hate hill repeats too and usually hit the puke factor early on, especially doing repeats.

I love your cute little picture!

Lauren/Lo/Sassy said...

Well, the good thing is you did them. Hills never feel GREAT in my opinion, but I know they will help me run on the flats easier so I just push through.

Biscuitman said...

Nice hat though!

Adam said...

Hahahahahaha. See, this is the exact reason that I like Spike :) Awesome.

BUT, you got the hills done. I've been told that one of the advantages of hill is that you can build a lot of muscle strength at a lower speed which should reduce injuries. I can only think that the wind helped that!
