Halloween Halfathon Race Recap

I survived the Halloween Halfathon, just barely.
78 @ the Start w/ 90% Humidity.

START: Late start, a bit of confusion and the humidity alone was making us hot just standing there. We did however find Maddy and got to chat a bit while we checked out all the random costumes.

The first 5k: Feeling good, HOT but good, made sure to stick with B.o.B, trying to incorporate that whole, don't start off too fast routine that worked so well in Chicago. We cheered the speedies passing us, we laughed and goofed around... By the 3 mile mark I threw up the peace sign and took off. The legs were feeling great and I felt like I had a good race in me.

To 10k - Still running strong but SO HOT. I Gu'd at 6, without water. It was HOT. Not.a.good.idea. *Cue Nausea* Need to pee.

From 10k To 10 M - "The wheels fall off and go crash, crash, boom... Crash, crash, boom. CRASH, CRASH, BOOM."

Shortly after the 6 mile mark I see a lone Porta-o-Potty and water stop. I drink some water in an attempt to calm my stomach and hit the pot. *Cue Dry Heaving* Stumble out and continue stumbling along til around mile 8. Why isn't there water at the turn around?!?!? Then I hear my name and realize B.o.B has caught up to me and she is running strong! I tell her I am dying and then she B.o.B's me. Yup, she smokes my @ss and I eat her dust... but I didn't care, my Boo had a PR in her future and I was excited for her! Get it girl! Get it for me while you're at it!!!

Before she disappears out of sight I see her high five a familiar looking runner dude with weird shoes and I rally enough energy to high five Jamoosh as he goes by... and then I start dry heaving again. This is about the time I adopt the Galloway Method and play leap frog with all the people surrounding me for the rest of the course. I've never seen so many people walking a race, nor have I ever walked so much of a race myself. Sure, maybe at a water stop and surely at the end of Gasparilla, but 5 miles worth?!?!? FAIL.

Just before the 10 mile marker I realize I'd been leap frogging
Cinderella for awhile and decide to chat with her; I had heard her mention to another runner earlier something about running Chicago and I think to myself maybe recalling a happier place and time will rally my spirits... She tells me I look familiar... "Wait are you The Redhead?" Holy crap ya'll, I'm famous! LOL! We stuck together for awhile, chatting and pushing each other on, thanks so much Cinderella!!!

Final 5k -
FML. I want to die. Cinderella pushes off somewhere around 12 and shortly thereafter I come up on a kid with a bike. Having no shame I offer him $5 to take me to the finish. Little bastard just laughed at me. After this I see D from the B.R.A. She tells me to stay linear thru the winding path to save energy and to keep going, I was almost there. I try to speed it up, I see the Finish but the nausea that has been in the pit of my stomach since mile 6 gets angrier. OMG am I ever going to finish this effing race?!?!? I
see B.o.B & P-Funk, I flash the thumbs down and yell, FAIL!

FINISH - I reenacted the scene above as I go under the Finish line. They did announce me as I went thru but I hated my life too much to appreciate it. Official Chip Time: 2:09 / 9:55 Pace

Post Race - I was a hot mess. My foot was killing me, my knee was killing me, and I almost passed out when we went over to chat up Jamoosh and his wife. Talk about making a stellar first impression! We grabbed a picnic table and I spent a good deal of time with my head between my knees trying not to pass out or puke.

The ride home was hell. Lots of pukey burps. So attractive. Puked at B.o.B's. Got cleaned up and started home. Puked on the side of I-4. (Actually got beeped at while puking, explain that to me.) You can just go ahead and deduct those classy points now...

Post Race Thoughts - Overall the course itself was a beautiful one and had the temps not been so hellacious, I might have actually enjoyed it.

EDIT: There were six water stations, although given the heat I think there should have been more, specifically at the turn around; where racers were left to their own devices for nearly 4 miles on an exposed stretch.

In short, this little Redhead died a slow brutal death. I had secretly hoped to PR but that obviously was not in the cards and I'm happy with my Finish time all things considered; I am just coming off an
amazing Marathon a few short weeks ago, I died hard core at the end but still finished in a respectable time, so I'll take it. We all have bad races and yesterday was just not my day... no worries, plenty on deck and hopefully cooler temps to boot.

"That which doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger."

Alright that's it for me... off to Daytona to cheer on
Tall Guy Surfing & Melissa in the Daytona Half!!! Make sure you hit up B.o.B's recap to congratulate her! Congrats Boo! GIANT PR MUCH?!?!?!

Ugh - those conditions sound BRUTAL. And the whole pukey sensation? Double ugh.

Congrats on finishing, famous lady!!

booo sucky races are no fun! Especially with tummy issues. Sorry girl :( Kudos to you for not giving up, you still finished!! Congrats!

Run Jess Run said...

There were no water stops along the way??? That's crap! I would be super crabby with the race officials about that! But you finished the race and took it like a rock star!

Kelly said...

Wow, good for you for not giving up. I can't believe they didn't plan for a FEW more water stops, I mean seriously- even if it's not exceptionally hot you still may need some water!
Oh boy, well good for you for finishing anyway!

Katie said...

Ugh I would have quit totally can't run in that! I'm glad you finished, but that sounds just nasty. Seems a lot of people struggled with that race. Like you said though you ran a kick ass marathon and that is really the race that counted ;) Get em next time and hope you feel better.

Maddy said...

You can blame the heat on me. It seems that 90% of the races I run are unseasonably hot.

It was brutal, but all things considered, you did a great job!

I also struggled with the heat and also thought that a water stop was missing at the turn around point.

The cooler temps will come!

You were running in costume, no? It's all just part of the runner zombie vibe that you were trying to portray. Dead running zombie. Death warmed over running zombie. And from that perspective...quite a success it sounds.

(sorry you felt so bad during the run)

ShutUpandRun said...

Damn girl, that just sounds...well, miserable. All that heat and puking. Hope you are recuping. Just think of Chicago and wipe this shitty marathon out of your brain.

trialsoftraining said...

How can ANY race director in Florida think that water stops are optional?! geeeeze

sorry you had a rough day...but you still finished!! :) And how many times can you say you "chatted with cinderella" while running? heh heh

Rookie on the Run said...

You are so funny! I usually skim race recaps because all the numbers and stats don't interest me much. This was truly entertaining! :)

I *hate* running when it's hot. That is very sucky that they didn't have more water stations. What were they thinking?

At least you finished and you got to meet some other bloggers! Oh, and you found out you're famous... it doesn't get much better than that!

onelittletrigirl said...

It would have made for a much better post if you had actually thrown up ON Jamoosh. Talk about wall of fame!!!

Kathryn said...

Hi Redhead! :) Although I'm sorry for both of us that it was a miserable race, it was great to meet you. Thanks for keeping me company for that middle-mile hell. And you are right - the times are respectable, really. Especially given the conditions!! I'm sorry you were so sick on the way home. I started shivering once I got to my daughter's competition, so I think I had some aftermath, too. Oh well, as I always say, races are training runs, too!

Hope to see you again!

Kathryn (Cinderella)

PS - too funny - we used the same terminology for mile 12. "Push off" or "shove off" was exactly what I did - I sure as heck didn't have it in me to do anything but try to churn in for the finish!

Hi - I'm a new follower. I just wanted to second a previous poster - ugh...and not enough water with that kind of humidity?!? Sorry it was such a tough one!

B.o.B. said...

Sorry you had such a tough race Boo. They certainly could have done with more water stops AND the heat was miserable. Thanks for being so supportive of me! You'll get at the next race fo shizzle. Love you!!! (Roll, roll, roll in ze hay!)

Jamoosh said...

Great job on the course. The heat just sucked it out of many runners - but you persevered and finished! You're stronger and wiser (and a few pounds lighter) for it!

Amanda said...

Oh girl, that sounds terrible. It was really hot in Charleston yesterday too, and then the humidity just makes it that much worse. I'm sorry you were pukey, but apparently you look good doing it since you got honked at;) Hope you're recovering well today!

RunToTheFinish said...

man that might be worse than my race..I felt like crap but wasn't puking. Hmm that might have given me the final incentive to quit and just sit on the beach, would have been so nice

Spike said...

wow, hot, humid, and no coverage, the terrible trifecta. it is why us northern runners have it so great.

Mel -Tall Mom on the Run said...

WOw oh wow sounds ROUGH!! Way to tough it out and finish girl. You are FAMOUS.. Love it!!

Cant wait to see the pictures..

NY Wolve said...

1. Congrats for finishing under such HORRIBLE conditions.

2. Sounds an awful lot like my recent 10K meltdown (heat/humidity/dehydration/puking..yep, very familiar!

3. Soooo glad I decided to skip this one!

And yes, you are famous! :-)

shellyrm said...

Way to keep going! Those conditions sound horrible. That is way too long of a race with that heat for no water stops! You'll deserve lots of Halloween candy for that one!!

Amber (Girl with the red hair) said...

Ugh, that sucks girl! But we all have races like that sometimes, at least you toughed through it and finished it! So good for you :-)

Mary said...

Wow, sorry about the race. This is the second hot and humid Halloween Half I have read. Finishing is the reward though, congrats on that!!

Staci Dombroski said...

I know how you feel! Sorry the conditions were not the best!

Living and Loving in L.A. said...

It should comfort you to know that only real runners ever puke. You go girl!!!
XOXO,
Erin
P.S. Hope that other than that, you had a great weekend!!!

Jamie said...

Congrats on sticking it out and finishing! Man it sucks hard-core when there's not enough water on the course. Now it's time for RICE on your knee and foot.

Jamie said...

Way to fight through a tough race with bad conditions! No water + heat/humidity blows...

aron said...

ewww that just sounds awful!! way to push through and finish up the race though!! a finish line always deserves a big congrats no matter how you got there :)

Jennifer Juniper said...

Just the temp and humidity alone would have sent me packing!

Ok, let's do halloween costumes next year! :)

busyrunningmama said...

Sorry it was soooooo hot, gotta love Florida! Also sorry about all the puking!! Ugghhhh..... Hope you are feeling better today!!!

Marlene said...

OH NO, that sounds brutal. I am impressed that you pushed through the finished the damn thing. Congratulations! Hope you rehydrated and felt better with some rest!

Katie A. said...

Damn girly, that was one big mess! I am so impressed that you kept moving and crossed that finish line! Total ROCKSTAR!
This race recap reminds me why I don't want to ever live in FL, it's November and the humidity is still at 90%= bad.news.bears.
Hope you're feeling better! :)

J said...

Congrats on finishing - I cant imagine having to run in those conditions! it was a solid 40 degrees here in the north this weekend with rain!

Irish Cream said...

Oh yuck . . . that sounds absolutely horrific! Way to hang in there, girl. They probably would have had to scrape me off of the road in those conditions! You are a trooper!

Jeri said...

seriously, where do you live, Hell? It was in the 40s here. That's insanity. I would've given the peace sign to the race at mile 3 and went and got drinks. Libations, not water.

Sam said...

OK, your race report was awesome in a way that only a runner who has totally had a bad day would understand. Sometimes your body loves you, sometimes your body hates you. Been there, done that, went to the med tent. Those crap races make the good ones that much sweeter.

Anonymous said...

Bummer for you. I had a great run. There WERE water stops every 2 miles or so, and because of the heat I paced myself. It was great fun, costumes, lot's of laughs and really nice volunteers.

Lisa said...

So sorry to hear it was a rough race for you. Even though you were hurting and I'm sure it wasn't what you were hoping for, you still had a great time! Hope you've recovered and are feeling better now. Take it easy!

TallGuySurfing said...

LMAO at offering the kid on the bike $5! You FAIL still busted my injured first Half Marathon by 6 minutes so you still beat this "dude!" I know you don't think so, but you still did a good job!

lindsay said...

niiiice. puking, i can sympathize. sounds like such a lovely time. maybe you were working with an undetected bug/run-down-ness and the race didn't help. what was up with the (lack of) water?!?

enjoyed your humbling experience though, sorry. :) hope you're feeling better now!

The Happy Runner said...

Wow. Yuck-o!

Your time was still good, though!!

The Laminator said...

Dear Little Redhead...

I think the course failed you with no water stops in 70 degree weather with 90% humidity? Hello, race directors!!! So I think you did a fine fine job in your race!

Thanks again for your Halloween surprise! I loved it very very much!
