Answer Fest Part I: Running & Training

First of all thank you to everyone for all the great questions! I had a slew of them and decided to break it up into two posts (answers in red).

First up: Running & Training

Zoƫ asks...

What is your most embarrassing running disaster story?

See Muddy Buddy race recap here
. Long story short while scaling the second obstacle I caught the butt of my shorts on a hook and ripped them right down the crack... thank god for built in undies!!!

K
asks...

Have you ever hit the 'puke threshold'?

Sorta... not in the, “I ran so hard I made myself puke”, but in the, “it’s so effing hot, I’m going to puke” kinda way.

Therese
asks...

Have you ever pooped yourself while running? Sorry I have the mind of a five year old.

In my happy little world girls do not do such things as poop. (But for the record thank goodness Hell-to-the-Nizoo!!!)

Katie asks...

What was your marathon training plan?

My Chicago Marathon training plan was actually formulated by yours truly. I researched a few online and then merged them together along with a sprinkle of the Half Marathon training plan my friend put together for me... it wasn’t the best of plans but it worked and got me through Chicago. This go around Coach EK of the BRA is putting one together based off my Chicago plan times and is confident of a sub 4 without speed work. He is my hero! : )

What is the most important marathon training tip you learned prior to Chicago? What tips do you have for humidity running?

I wish I had some magic answer for this but honestly it all boils down to my motto: “Beat the Heat.” Which is why I was up running my long runs sometimes as early as 3am this summer. Humidity is unavoidable down here in Hades so your best bet will always be hitting the streets as early as possible to avoid the added beat down of the sun and Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!

If you can run one mile with anyone anywhere...who would it be and where would you do it?

My Dad, through Central Park. While training for Chicago I feel like I became closer to my Dad, he was so supportive and so proud of me when I finished; Central Park because it's one of my dream places to run; put together would be a moment I would cherish forever.

If you were only allowed to put one running-related item on your life bucket list, what would it be?

4:00 Pacer for the Chicago Marathon – So many people, newbie’s especially, aspire to break that 4:00 on their first Marathon and I want to be the one that helps them achieve that while being the best d@mn cheerleader/pacer you’ve ever had. (I just gotta break 4:00 myself first) :)

Triathlon or ultramarathon?

Triathlon.

NY Wolve, asks...

Why did you start running?

A few reasons; initially to get over a break-up but also to sleep better and to burn off all this energy

Best running memory?

CHICAGO!!!

Spike asks...

Is your knee and/or foot better?

Meh... some days they’re fine and some days they hate my guts. Like today for instance... my ITB was ANGRY and my LR became a bit of a FAIL.
Your favorite local 5K?

It’s a toss up between the Reindeer Run and/or the Universal 5k; both are fun runs and very festive.

Hm, this info might be out there in the blog somewhere - but, did you play any sports during high school or college??/ Have you always been athletic?

No way, I was too cool for school back in the day. Organized events, especially sports, was not my thing. I was the funky, party throwing, art girl.

Anonymous (aka my Beaker Luv) asks...

BE HONEST!! What's one thing you miss about your life pre-training for marathons? And your answer can't be Carrot Cake cause you should just eat it, it's a vegetable darn it all!!!!

Porch Nights. :)

shellyrm asks...
When running a race when is the last possible moment you would or have actually passed someone just to improve your place standing in the race?

I’m not terribly competitive, basically I sprint it in at the mile mark at races and hope to chick anyone within reach but here’s a funny story you might enjoy; Last year my boss ran the OUC 5k and somehow we ended up neck and neck the entire race. Right at the 3 M I gun it, as most do, to sprint into the Finish. Well Bossman decides he WILL NOT get chicked by me and even though he wanted to die he digs deep and finishes mere seconds in front of me... waving as he does. Ironically he refuses my challenge of a rematch and instead recounts this story to anyone who will listen that he beat the “office runner.”

RunningLaur asks...
Do you have any pros/cons for being short in races? (You're so tiny and cute!) I've been freakishly tall since I was little and have always dreamed of being small in crowds - being able to maneuver all fast. But then I get to thinking about guys armpits and whatnot, gross. Thought you might have some funny insights or stories :)

I think this is my favorite question because it reminds me of something I had forgotten to mention on my Chicago race recap... Because of my height I spend the early part of most races bobbing and weaving out of the way of elbows. At Chicago I did this almost the entire first half before it finally started to thin out. I remember thinking, I bet I'd be good at boxing. LOL!

harmony asks...

My question would be--do you plan on extending your running into a triathlon or will you continue to focus on marathons and other long distance events?

Yes, one of my goals for 2010 is to train for and complete a Triathlon.

Shannon asks...

Abs - what exercises do you do - and I swear if you say "none" I'm going home and crying. LOL

After all my runs when I’m laying on the floor with my feet up on the wall I just do sit-ups/crunches in sets of 25. 25 to the left, 25 regular and 25 to the right. Repeat until 15 minutes is up. That’s pretty much it... besides core work-outs such as push-ups & planks.

Maddy & Irish Cream ask:

What is your favorite post- long run meal?

It's usually a Lox Bagel from Einstein's Bagel minus the weird stuff.

What is your favorite post-race (Half marathon or longer)meal?

The pizza & beer we got after Chicago was AH-MAZING!

What do you eat before a long run

One piece of wheat bread toast w/ banana

What do you eat before a race (any distance)

See above. (I have OCD)

Great questions peeps! I hope you enjoyed the answers!!! Tune back next week for Answer Fest Part II: Personal & Misc.

A TON of you commented regarding my taking the 100 Push Up Challenge and my previous record of 60-70 consecutive push-ups. To that extent I wanted to clarify that although I never followed a plan like this (which is going well and an excellent plan, highly recommend!!!) I got up to that many by starting in a similar fashion: Initially I figured out how many I could do and then 3x a week I did that number. Each week after I added 5-10 more based on how strong I felt. Slowly I made my way up to 60-70 something at a time, 3x a week, in sets of 20 with about a 30 second rest in between.

That's it for me, TGIF peeps! Have fantabulous weekends! Rock those races & runs! Catch ya'll on the flipside!!!

Love it! I hate speed work, just can't make myself want to do it. I loved learning more about you! And yes at Nike I thought I was going to get my nose broke I'm so short and elbows are so close to my head!

Even though I feel I know everything about you this was still fun to read and I'm mad you're making us wait until next week to read the second part!!! I miss porch nights too...although I thought you'd say Saturday pool days even though both of those probably ended because of me...we need to have one soon (porch night, and pool day when it warms up)!

Shannon said...

Ha! I knew you had to do some kind of ab exercise! :) Thanks for sharing!!!

Sorry your ITB is acting up--mine is too! Boo!!

Ha, I'm usually bobbing and weaving elbows too--I always feel like I have to take 2 steps to match everyone else's one step because I'm short too. Hmmm...

Love your answers! If only you could do a biking, running, boxing tri - I could see it being hilarious and fun to train for.

Totally agree with the 'Beat the Heat' training. For some reason running at 4AM doesn't seem all that strange any more....

harmony said...

Truly candid. I loved it! I think a Tri would be awesome. The swimming would be my biggest challenge.
Looking forward to the second list.

Lox after a long run? I would hurl, for sure. (I am not a lox fan.) I drink a thing of chocolate milk.

And that is a nice thought about the 4:00 pacer. I ran with the 3:30 pace group for about 5 miles, and the two pacers were great. I wish I knew their names and could thank them -- they made me smile.

You are just the cutest little redhead out there (well, I am at least a close second!) Loved all the questions and answers! So funny, you are trying to finagle your way out of speedwork...silly girly, speedwork is awesome!!

Great! This Q&A helped me (as a new reader) get a little caught up on "you".

Great answers! I like that you were bobbing and weaving through elbows-- that is hilarious.

Ugh, I need to get back on the push up bandwagon.

Zoƫ said...

OMG, I'm dying laughing at your embarassing story!! AND, I'm getting nervous for my relay race tomorrow because I think it's EXACTLY like your Muddy Buddy race! Well, minus the bikes, but with obstacles galore. I just might have to wear two pairs of undies just in case I rip my shorts (and since it's friday the 13th, I'm not taking chances!).

LOL!! Great answers, redhead!

Great Q&A. I may have to do that too. I vote you totally do a tri next year. You'll love it, and I suspect you'll be great at it.

Irish Cream said...

LOVE THIS! I kind of want to do this now, but I'm secretly afraid nobody will ask any questions . . . and it will just kind of be really humiliating! Ha.

Yay, so fun--thanks for sharing with us (and thanks a MILLION again for keeping me company on my long run this a.m. So nice to finally get to meet you!!)! :)

tons of q's and a's here. the font seemed to get smaller as i read on... what's up with that? in my old age here i can't read unless it's size 48 font ok?

is that all it takes to get your 6-pack fab? going to lay against the wall now for infinity...

Spike said...

awesome answers; great to get to know you a little better.

also, I asked four questions...what happened to the other two?

Jesse said...

Being a 4:00 pacer would be a great gig to have. I ran the vast majority of my first marathon with a pace group, and the pacers definitely can make a world of difference.

Carlee said...

Love this post and I totally agree with you on the elbows. I've gotten elbowed in the head more times than I can remember.
