Do as I say, NOT as I do.

First things first:

22 mile bike ride + standing/walking around for 4+ hours at night gig + 4+ mile "easy run" turned Tempo = ANGRY QUADS/HAMSTRINGS

The best part about that little equation is that neither Deputy S nor I wanted to run, but we didn't want to let the other down so neither called to cancel. When I arrived at his place Sunday night he looked like death warmed over, i.e. hungover, and I was completely exhausted. So what did we do? We still hit up the trail... and instead of making it a recovery/easy run, we decided to just go balls to the wall to get it over with. So much huffing and puffing! You'd have never been able to tell I just ran a marathon two weeks ago... seriously. Hardest 4 mile run ever and it was our own faults.

4.37 mi @ 8:22 -
FAIL.
But it's ok because last night I had an "easy" 3 miler planned... but apparently I have forgotten how far 3 miles is and what "easy" is defined as...
I need a Garmin. There, I said it.

Now on to the real reason for this post;

I have a confession: I've been a very bad girl.

Not in the naughty way you're thinking! Perverts. (Well actually...)

No, I mean in the "I've been running through pain" way. For months.

I have no viable excuse either; basically I didn't want to acknowledge or accept all the pain because I was bound and determined to run Chicago nomatterwhat. If I'd have gone to see the doc I was fairly certain he'd of said "No Running" and quite frankly I didn't want to hear it. I did however promise myself after Chicago I'd finally go get a once over. So I headed over to "Dr. Knows-It-All-And-Refuses-To-Listen-To-Me" this morning; requested X-rays and a new referral to an actual sports orthopedic. (Not to be confused with the quack he sent me to last time that didn't know how far a marathon was.) The knees have been an ongoing issue as ya'll know (ITB) but I wanted to make sure it wasn't anything more serious and the foot started hurting after Chicago and despite R.I.C.E.'ing like a MO-FO there's still been lingering pain. Now I may have mentioned this but I HATE my doctor. He doesn't listen to a thing I say, EVER. For example, this is how the start of my visit went this morning;
Doc: "So I see you need a referral, what's going on?"
*Begin haphazardly perusing medical chart*

Me: "Well I ran the Chicago Marathon two weeks ago and the entire time I was training I was in pain, you might remember I came for ITB issues and you referred me to a PT."

Doc: "Hmmm what was that? You ran a marathon you say? Which one? Did you finish?"

Me: *In my head* No dumb@ss I only ran 3/4 of it.
What I really said: "As I said, I ran Chicago and yes I finished."

And so goes the rest of our exchange. Mind you this is after I sat in a waiting room for an hour after which I spent another 40 minutes in an examining room waiting on him to see me before he sent me down to x-ray.

Diagnosis: Thinning cartilage behind both knees and soft tissue bruising on my foot.

Prescription: Quad strengthening via xtraining, more ICE, new shoes and ease up on the running before I head back into marathon training for Gasparilla. Also, extra refills of Naproxen and samples of Skelaxin. I love me some anti-inflammatories!

It's safe to assume I am overjoyed that it was nothing more serious as I was majorly worried there was going to be a stress fracture and/or a "No Running" stamp put on my chart. Thank you running gods, I owe ya one!

So now that I have my piece of mind I will give you this advice:
Do as I say, NOT as I do.

If you feel pain, GO TO THE DOCTOR!

Do NOT continue running thru pain hoping to "run it off" and do not be hard headed. Stubborn thy name is Morgan. Had I of just sucked it up and gone sooner I would have gotten this piece of mind and not been running around for the last few months in constant pain wondering if at any minute my leg was going to break off. FAIL.

Be careful with the skelaxin, it can make you pretty sleepy. I hope your pain gets better...you are a tough chica for running thru that pain. Ouch!!

Ugh this is why I hate doctors. They never listen!!! Now YOU on the other hand BETTER listen and add in a few other days of cross training so you aren't wearing down the same joints over and over. I can tell you thinning cartiledge is nothing to mess around with...that's how my dad ended up with a knee replacement!

Ok momma Therese can end her lecture. Can't wait to see you tomorrow am!

Welllll...I'm avoiding the doctor at the moment for something potentially very serious but I am NOT going until after NYC!!!!

(Five more days.)

you ran through pain, you rocked Chicago...I'm thinking a little x-training and some rest is a good idea. and I know, I'm a doctor (just not that kind of doctor).

glad to hear the injuries are treatable and you can relax knowing you won't break during a run.

Okay... I am sorry this happened to you, but I am very glad you told us about it, because I was feeling really guilty about not pushing through & not running MCM. You made me feel better. Glad your knee and foot injuries are not too bad! :)

Shame on you! I learned this lesson last year... after running through an injury.. which lead to TWO stress fractures. Not fun. So, I now go to the doctor if I feel anything resembling pain... Doesn't hurt that my doctor is a total hottie....who also runs.

lol. who actually heeds that advice. psssshhh. i haven't been having pain (as you know) but i've definitely been putting off going to the doc for this whatever-the-crap-is-going-on. i tend to self-diagnose with the worst conditions/diseases ever so i didn't want to be told i had a brain tumor or ms or something before the race... so i'm hoping to still be alive on 11/2 so i can schedule that doc appt. (yes, i know, i have no medical-logic) plus, i hate doctor's too... now if i could see a doc like house who would actually figure out what was wrong... i'd be there.

i'm surprised you didn't really whine about your pains on here pre-race. i mean yeah you hinted at it but i never got the impression it was really that bad. way to keep a secret!

glad the news is about as good as it could be and hope your issues clear up asap. at least you have some time to take it easy and rest before gasp.

Oh you silly girl running through the pain!!!! That's runners for you, though!

I hope you get better soon!!

Oh, I have SO done this! I ran through pain all last summer (in fact, I was in pain 24 hours a day) but I was in such major denial that I refused to do anything about it, for fear of the prognosis getting in the way of my marathon plans.

Anyhoo, glad you got checked out and that it's nothing too serious. Now, make sure you follow doc's orders. :)

Hehehehe...YOu can still say bad words until you are a Mommy.. then you reaplce swear words with "Oh Monkey" and "What the French Fry?" LOL

Glad that you do not have to STOP.. Find a friend to SLOW YOU DOWN!! I am the same way, I go balls out every time...except for the days when the calendar says "Speedwork" go figure..

Have a pretty day Madam!!

actually latest research shows that running does not cause joint wear and tear known as ARTHRITIS. Being overweight, diabetes, and smoker...(risk factors for heart disease) does. Do not pay any mind to the thinning cartilage he cant even tell you that from an xray. You do however have some biomechanical flaw otherwise ITB and foot pain would not occur. Im sad your PT sucked. The shoe thing does sound like good advice. What are you running in?

The Shabby Princess said...

Ummm, impressed beyond belief that you ran a marathon with ITB pain!! I can barely make it .5 mile(s) when mine acts up--oh, and yes, it is acting up--thanks 20 miler.

Gulp. Marathon in 3.5 weeks. Gulp. Couldn't run today because it hurt to bad. Gulp. Now 100% petrified I won't be able to run 26.2. Gulp.

This, my friend, is why bubble wrapping myself was necessary. In fact, Selena and I were joking about NOT going to the doctor until after the race, as we were terrified about hearing the words, "No running!"

Sam said...

Don't sweat the four-miler. You're not 100% recovered from a marathon for about a month and you really shouldn't do a whole lot of speedwork during that time. Of course, like you said, do as I say, not as I do.

Is your doctor a sports doctor? I went to a regular doctor for tendinitis in my knee last year and he gave me drugs and it got better. But it flared up again this year. I picked a sports doctor, and the first thing he did was check my hamstrings. They were way too tight and I was overcompensating. So, I went to physical therapy, and when we got my hamstrings better, they noticed my knee went in a little bit with my stride because my glutes weren't strong enough to support it, so I worked on that and now I have a fix, not just a band-aid. I found people who "get" what we do and it made all the difference.

Ohhhhh girl! You know I know how your feeling except I am a BIG baby and post about my pain!!! You ran a marathon with yours and I can't go a mile without stopping.......LOL!!!
The skelaxin directions say to take it 3-4 times a day.....DO NOT DO THAT!!!! They make me fall asleep within 10-15 minutes of taking them, hence why I have been to bed at 9:00 for 4 nights in a row but they do help you sleep well!!! I am taking Naproxen too!!

Take a bit of a rest, SLOW down, recover from your marathon and do some cross training.....we already know you are Super Woman.... you do not have to prove it!! Do as I say......And as I do!!!! HaHa!! And can you whine a little more, you are making me look bad over here!!!!

I ran through pain last year and it cost me 4 months!!! You get yourself rested and better!!!!!!

Stephanie Nichole said...

oh no! I hope the knees feel better soon! Lots of stretching and I always do laps, or run in the pool when my knees or hips are getting tight. Its a great way to get exercise, run, and not pound the pavement. :)

Hooray for no stress fractures! Be careful with that Skelaxin (I've taken it before) and yay for being naughty...hehe... I mean, no, bad girl! Hahaha... I'm glad it's not as you feared now take care of yourself! I'll do as you say and go see the doc after I run this little Half marathon this weekend! LOL

My foot doctor put me on Meloxicam for my PF..it seems to help pretty well...and I'm not popping all that Ibuprofen.
Thanks for the comment on my last post! I forgot about pace groups! Do smaller races have pace groups?

I was reading something about how most docs will actually tell yo uthere is a cartiledge problem...but honestly a lot of times there isn't. Running builds it up not breaks it down. Anywho thought I'd share that.

Glad you went though and have some sort of kind of advice that you may some day follow

Are you having ITB issues in both knees or just one? I have to give props to my Mueller Hg80 knee brace. Best.Invention.Ever. I still have problems around mile 2, until I work out the kinks, but I don't have half of the issues that I used to have. (My IT band tries to overcompensate for the weak, torn meniscus).

I also agree with Sam...not that I've gone to a sports doctor! LOL But, the injured friend that I was supposed to run Disney with *did* go to a sports doctor and discovered the same thing; tight hamstrings. I've been using the stretches that he gave her, and they have been a tremendous help. As much as I hate to admit it, stretching (and in the proper way) is insanely important. And, I hate it.

What's a soft bruise to your foot--like the top of your foot?
I'm sorry some Dr. are lame-os!

Listen to Ron above. Get someone to video tape you running and see how much of a heel strike you have - the more pronounced the heel strike, the more pain in your knee. I know this from experience.

Clair said...

I hope you get some quick relief. I've had a lot of knee issues, and they're absolute worst!

I love my Garmin. Absolutely worth the investment.

I'm glad you went and have a plan of how to get better so you can run yet another marathon!

OMG, there are some effing terrible doctors out there. Like the one I went to see when I fell down a flight of marble stairs and majorly jacked up my entire left shoulder/elbow/arm. That was awesome. Dude saw me for like a split second and ordered me to "go back to doing what you used to do". For reals? Like, did you hear the part about how I'm in severe pain 24/7 and unable to move it?

Damn, glad you got that checked out, though, you sneaky little thing! Not that I don't totally do that all the time--but again, do as I say, not as I do!

i agree with Amanda. skelaxin can send you for a trip. pack lightly.
head over to amazon for great deals on a garmin. i got a 305 for almost half of retail. thing rocks.
not as much as you, but still....

The Laminator said...

Oh Morgan, Morgan, Morgan...what shall we do with you...you sneaky thing! The MD part of me doesn't like the fact that you waited until AFTER the marathon to get yourself checked out but the runner side of me is thinking "well, if she can run a marathon, then it mustn't have been so bad...definitely not a stress fracture if it can handle 26.2!"

Still...don't go crazy like that because it could have potentially be something more serious.

Or at least, if you're planning on being sneaky, consult someone who knows a little bit first to make sure it's not dangerous...someone, oh i don't know...like ME!!!

Go take your pills and Rest up Redhead!

Girl, you're crazy, but I'd probably do the same thing!

Um, I got my garmin for $160 on amazon brand spankin new! DO IT!

Aw, stink. I'm sorry to hear that.
You might ask around and try to find a sports physician, esp one that is also an endurance athlete. My doc does triathlons and she totes understands that "stopping" isn't an option. She's on our side! Be sweet to yoursel and hope you are good as new VERY soon!

I'm stil amazed that ANYONE can get through Marathon training without some sort of injury.....this chick needs to step up the RICE-ing / icing (in general) before that business starts. ehhh

glad everything looks okay (re: stress fracture, agh!) !! Take it eeeeasy over there!

I hope the bod heals up. Just give it time. I've been there before. Sometimes it just seems easier to run through the pain.

Getting all caught up in my reading. Great post and great advice. It's beautiful running weather here and I'm stuck in a stinky gym. O Well, I'm already picking out the next one. Good Luck Sista!
