My 18 miler was quite possibly the best run I have had to date... the locale, the company, the pace but more importantly THE FINISH. This run marks the first time I have ever finished 100% strong. Not.one.walk.break.at.all!!! .25 from the finish I even opened it up and sprinted through til the end. I could have kept running. I have not felt this good before, during and after a run EVER!!!
2:30 am my alarm goes off and I'm out the door and on I-4 headed east by 3 am. Heading out to New Smyrna Beach I think about how many times I've made the trip out there to party it up with my NSB Boys; Tall Guy Surfing and Harold... back then I would have never guessed I'd ever be trucking out there to run an 18 miler... back then I would've laughed at you as I chugged another Coors Light if you had said that. My how times have changed...
I arrive a little too promptly (Read: Zero Traffic that early on the interstate) much to the surprise of TGS & Tucker the Toe Licker McF*cker (TGS's dog; who ALWAYS licks my toes...). After stretching out and gearing up we head out right about 4:30 am... our route starts on the mainland, crosses over the intercoastal to the beach and then an out, back and around an amazing boardwalk area repeat. I couldn't have asked for a better route, it was absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Mind you most of the run was in the dark... but towards the tail end of the run we got the most amazing sunrise... but I jump ahead...
Around the 6ish mile we hit a Sevy for our (my) first pee break... the Sevy holds a special place in our hearts because back in the day, at closing time when Flagler Tavern spewed us out onto Flagler Ave after an insane night of boozing it up and dancing like a bunch of idiots we'd head back to TGS's house, hit up the "closet o' fun" and masquerade up the street to the local Sevy where we'd buy the place out of Taquito's... dressed like this... (Don't ask...)
Circa 2007
Circa 2009
As I said, things have changed. The Sevy guy "Hammy" was in awe of our awesomeness and after he snapped this pic for us, said, and I quote; "Dude you guys are going to live til your 100!" Classic. LOL!
After this we hit the beach and it was glorious! The stars were beautiful, the breeze from the ocean was refreshing and I was feeling amazing! My knee was twinging a little the entire run but not so much as I noticed after awhile; in fact besides running a bit slower than norm out of apprehension of pushing the knee too hard, I have never felt so great As we got past the 10 mile mark he dug up our reserves... yup I said dug up...

After that we hit the boardwalk that runs thru the dunes and TGS told me the history surrounding the area which was pretty cool. Then it was back to the beach in time to catch the sunrise...
As we headed back up Flagler Ave TGS started falling off; we had officially gone farther than he had ever gone and he was feeling it... so I started singing him chants and rooting him on, he had it in him, he just needed to find the MOTIVATION-MO-MO-TIVATION!!! I told him to "chase the pony tail" as Jamoosh might and this helped him get thru the remaining mile to the 15 mile mark. (TGS: I bet you're loving beating a guy running right now huh?)
After a final Gu I hit the road to finish up my remaining 3... but as I neared the boardwalk again I noticed a truck had turned around twice in the time I had been running, once beeping at me ,and as I got into the park he was now parked. Sometimes being a girl running just isn't all that it's cracked up to be... When I got to TGS waiting for me I asked him if he'd mind running with me thru the wooded part of the boardwalk because I was nervous. I felt bad asking, as I knew he was wore out from the 15 but SAFETY FIRST so we hit the walk and rounded out the final 1.5... What an amazing feeling to finish that strong and to feel like I could run further!!! Was it the peanut butter & banana toast I had*? Was it all the rest & pampering I did all week? Was it the inspirational run on the beach? Maybe I had channeled my very own BEARK run?!?
Feeling like we could conquer the world (cuz we had) we headed back to TGS's house were I promptly hit up the tub for an excruciatingly cold ice bath and a refreshing serving of Joint Juice...
After a bit of recovery we got cleaned up and headed out to eat small children... I mean grab breakfast and then it was back to O-town for me...
THANKS TGS FOR AN AWESOME RUN & CONGRATS ON 16.5!!!
Closing Statement: Bring it Chicago... BRING IT!!! 3 MORE WEEKS!!!
*I never used to eat before my runs, lately I have incorporated a banana but that's it.
Jamoosh - I hope you don't mind I jacked your format for this post...

well done. yes, bring it on!!
congratulations on an excellent run!
Hey! Robin sent me over to your blog and told me I'd like it! I'm new to the blogging world and also to the running world. I can't even imagine running 18 miles-that is so awesome! I look forward to reading more of your posts.
BTW-You have killer abs!
I think you also jacked the ice bath format from my wife with that sweatshirt!
Great run!
Great job and excellent run! Again I decided to read at the PERFECT moment. I'm about to head out on my first 15 miler, but this has totally calmed my nerves and I'm ready to go. Thanks!
Awesome job on the 18. Now it REALLY would've been a sight if you would've completed it with the full on dress up clothes. :) haha.
Congrats on the great run! You're going to rock Chicago!
That run looks really 1) fun; 2) early early early; and 3) in a pretty place. Running on the beach is hard, even with buried GU.
Three more weeks .. I am envious. NY is seven weeks out.
LOL.... great post! I didn't read yours until posting mine and it looks like we both mentioned the high points! Thanks for running with me! You rock! Oh and the burying of the water and GU is an old surfing trick for when you need a place to hide your car keys. That's how we surfers roll! :-)
AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!!!!!! Sounds like a great run! what happened with that creepy creeperton truck? Those Dudes need to get a life. Really. I always wonder if I could in fact outrun a fat creep, even after 15/16 miles I bet you could kick him in his junk and run. But good thinking with safety first.
Awesome run and awesome pictures! I was wondering what a Sevvy was, but I do know those 7-11s well!
Keep it up!!!
Amanda
P.S. my verification work is "dedreckt": You dedreckt that measly 18 miler! Go get 'em girl!
Awesome run! It's a toss up between the sand cooler for water, and the Sevvy as my favorite part!
Great job girl!! I think the burried water and GU has to be the coolest thing EVER! I need to find some running friends like that, LOL!
congrats!!!!
2:30 am? oh my!
Whoo hoo! Just what you needed before you head to Taperville - a kick @ss run! Way to go - Congrats!
Go girl!!! I cant wait to read all about chicago!
You don't eat before runs?
That's awesome! Way to kill it!
I love your comment about the coors light and how life has changed!! I feel the same way (about the same beer!!) What an exciting run and cool way to post it. Your abs are off the hook too!! WTG!
OMG you are 100% rock star! Are you kidding me? You are so going to kick the ass of the Chicago Marathon!
Keep it up!!! :)
Way to go girl! I love it when I finish strong. It hasn't happened lately however. Sigh....
What prayer do you say to the Running Gods? Is it similar to the "I Like Big Butts" song?
Congrats on a great run!
Whhoooo! Good job, don't you just LOVE runs that go like that :-)
First of all, HUGE congrats on the strong 18-miler! TOTAL REDEMPTION! Awesome job.
Sounds like a great run. LMAO at burying your reserves! Love the photos. I need to live near the beach...
Wow oh WOW!! Great work little lady. So I am TOTALLY curious how a lady of "Midget status" kept stride with a "Tall Guy"? Baffling.
The photos are great! That is creeepy about the truck. And burying the reserves, PRICELESS.
great going girl!
your abs have inspired me to give planks a try. do you do them on your forearms or are you hardcore on your hands?
You did awesome girl!! Great job! Head over and enter my giveaway before Wednesday!!!
I can't believe you got up at 2:30AM - you are just plain dedicated!! You are so gonna rock Chicago!!!
See...here's the thing. YOU, my dear, are a REAL runner. I'm in amazement of your running ability, not to mention sort of jealous you can 1.) Keep up with a boy that looks like that, and 2.) Wear nothing but a sports bra and shorts and 3.) Not stop once for 18 whole miles. YOU. ARE. AH-MAZING. Thanks for encouraging my little 20-miler yesterday! Even though I'm sure it took me twice as long to run 20 as it did you to run 18, I still ran two more miles than you. I had to say it, it's the only bragging right I have. XOXOXOXOX. You GO girl!
First off: Kudos to you for having the dedication to wake up at 2:30am for a run... did you go to bed before dinner the night before?!
I love it that he buried your reserves! Awesome.
I am so glad that he was there with you to run (even though he was tired) while the creepy truck was around... you're right, it sucks being a girl sometimes!
I am so glad that you had such an amazing run. There are few greater feelings than the feeling of accomplishment after you kick 18 miles' ass, I'm sure!!! (Though I wouldn't know anything about that.... YET)
Your posts are always some of my favorites to read... you sure can captivate an audience!! Way to go, sista! Hope you have a fabulous day!
Lets go Morgan Lets go!!!
congrats again on a most excellent long run! sounds like such a fun one too. that dude is either freakishly tall or you're short... or both! you should've ran in those costumes... personally...
freaky about the truck sketchball, sometimes i hate being a girl...
Great job on your long run!!
Once again...your abs! Geesh, I need to go home and do a zillion crunches! :)
Too funny that he dug a hole for the Gu and water!
I hate sketchy people like that...scarying you half to death while you're trying to run!
Glad you had a great run, especially after the injury. Good luck with the last few weeks of training for Chicago!
Wow! Great job! I hope you do well in the Marathon and I'll definately be following to see how it goes and what your strategies were. I'm running my first marathon in January so I just started a blog to post what I'm learning and the whole process..Check it out (jessrunworld.blogspot.com). Good luck!!
FUN!! I'm so jealous of the beautiful scenery (okay and your flat abs)! Take it easy...Chicago is YOURS!!
i adore my long runs, but holy crap 2:30 AM, no way I have to sleep more to even feel like a human being!! Then again if it gave me your abs i might forgo an hour
Great run...I like running in the city-scape, but damn I bet a long run along the ocean is great!
In 20 days all the long runs and 2:30 wake-ups will be rewarded!
You've put in all the hard work, now taper to the finish!
BTW, don't know if Brandi answered your question, but yes we run in the same training group on Tuesday and Saturdays. We're training for the same half and have ran in some other training groups together as well. :)
Nice job!!! I think I'm more excited about you running Chicago than I am about running MCM! hahaha.
I dont know how you get up at 2:30am! insane! Great job!
Congrats on an amazing 18 miler! You are officially READY TO ROCK CHICAGO! Wahoo! I'm so excited for ya.
Amazing pictures by the way...
this: "quite possibly the best run I have had to date"... is AWESOME! nothing like a perfect long run to send you into taper :)
it looks beautiful! I wouldn't mind doing that...without the running of course :)
