Recently I tried a new electrolyte product and wanted to attempt my first product review, this could become a weekly to bi-weekly thing depending on how it goes over, so without further ado I give you...
Awhile back after reading Chic Runner's raving report about Nuun and after discussing it further via IM with her, I decided to give it a certified Redhead Running test... I usually stick to my tried and true Strawberry-Kiwi G2 but after crapping out at the end of countless runs I really wanted to analyze my hydration situation. After hitting up the website for retailers near me I trekked over to Glory Cycles to buy a tube. They only had a few flavors which was disappointing, I really wanted to try the Tri-Berry, but at least they had it.Test Run # 1 was a Tempo 8 miler with the Citrus Fruit flavor. The directions stated to dissolve one tablet in a 16 oz bottle of water, but because I am skeptical I dissolved a half a tab in a 24 oz bottle. Right off the bat I was not a fan of the taste but I made it through the entire bottle and besides the taste it worked great.
Test Run # 2 came in the form of my 14 miler; I started off drinking a small G2 bottle of it and then I stashed a water bottle of it at Mile #10. The flavor was easier to choke down this time (although I am still not a fan) and I could really tell the difference overall with helping me not bonk out at the end. I finished that run strong and I really think it had a major hand in the matter.
Test Run #'s 3 & 4 were my easy 6 miler run (cut short (to 4.5) due to S.R.S = Sucky Run Syndrome) and a Tempo 8 miler (again cut short (to 6) for the same reason) and while my run sucked, I felt properly hydrated.
Come Friday I hit Glory's again and snagged another tube, this time the Orange Ginger, to see if I would like the flavor better. I drank another G2 size bottle of it mixed with water before the 16 Miler but didn't have a chance to mix up any for the rest of the run. I felt great throughout the run but definitely noticed I didn't feel nearly as hydrated by the end. I def liked the Orange Ginger better and an added bonus; it hasn't upset my tummy once!

Great reveiw. I love nuun - and use at full strength - it helps me immensely.
My fav is tri-berry. The rest that i've tried are 'meh'
although I really want to try the banananuun...
I'm really hoping to win that giveaway! I want to try the Tri-Berry too!
I don't run far enough to have any hydration issues, but this is good info if I ever decided to step it up :) Sorry for the recipe, you know those calories suck right through the computer screen, don't ya???
I am a huge fan of NUUN. I use it on my long rides and runs. The taste took me a little bit to get use to, but it helps a lot. Great review.
Thanks for the review, I am excited to try it. I had read Mel's review too and entered her giveaway last week ( sorry!) I hope to win but if not. I'll be headed to find some in my area! Next weekend my long run goes to 6 miles, so I think I am starting to get to where I will need the extra boost although I do fine with just water right now!
Thanks for the review. I have heard so many good things about this stuff, I MUST try it. I think I'll buy some if I don't win Tall Mom's giveaway. :)
WOW your review is WAY better than mine...course I am not in Marathon training mode (jealous) so I will have more gems soon..
Hugs for the nod!!
Have a great day pretty girl!
You are so cute! Where are you from in Michigan? I grew up with my time split between Michigan (where my Dad lives)and Colorado (where my Mom lives)...I'm actually going to Michigan tomorrow morning too! My Mom's family is also from there. I'll be up at our beach cottage on Lake Michigan the rest of the week, and I can't wait! My Mom's family is from Grand Rapids, and my Dad lives in Richland by Kalamazoo!
Alas, I love L.A. It's still fun to go back and visit, especially to go to the beach!
Thanks for picking it up for me! I am going to try it out tomorrow on my 9 miler. Love ya!
thanks for the review. I decided that I needed to find something, soon, for my long runs. I love G2--normally, the citrus punch, I think--but know that I need more hydration, too. So far, I have been fine with that and water.
Oh, and definitely, let's meet when you are here in November. It will be great to show you some of Denver and I know some great pubs, too.
Interesting. Question, is it fizzy at all? For some reason when I think of something dissolving in my water I think "fizz"...
thanks for sharing and thanks for the comments on my post..glad to know I'm not the only crazy one planning races almost a year in advance! ;)
Hmmm - maybe I'll have to give that a try! Though, I don't do so well with choking down things that don't taste good :S
Great review. I think you may have talked me into actually trying it.
I have the berry one and it is ok..it kind of tastes like fruit-flavored nothing to me. However, one of my vanmates on WWR was a naturopath so we all got into a discussion of ingredients in sports/running items and what they actually are....reading off my nuun tablet label, I came across propylene glycol--yes, he confirmed, that is the same stuff that ANTIFREEZE is made of. Ugh! He said it is used as a preservative and thickening agent to bind things together. But yes, it is still ANTIFREEZE you are eating in that nuun tablet...I haven't used one since then.
I loooove Nuun! I usually use the lemon lime one, but have triberry or whatever its called to try today :)
oooo. thanks for the tips! I like the acronym SRS and will definetly be borrowing that!!
ps-how do I enter the give-a-way?!
I heart nuun big time (found your blog via a shout out they gave you on Twitter). I also won my supply and now I'm having a hard time finding a local supplier.
Glad you hung in there for a full test run - you'll never go back now!
Nice review! And thanks for telling us about Mel's giveaway. I'd definitely like to check this out :)
I suffer from SRS at all times. Do they ever get unsucky?
(next time, kiss the young guys if they're hot enough - it works for me!!)
I love nuun. It works well with me and really makes me not get that boink feeling too :) And upset stomachs just suck in general... g
I love tri-berry anything. Tri-Bery GU is my favorite flav of all time. I'll have to check out the Nuun. Now; I'm a gonna check out your giveaway! Later.
Tara
I am trying to become a runner and LOVE your blog...guess you just found a new follower.
Stopping by from SITS!=)
great review! some of those flavors do sound 'funky' to me and i'd be leary to try them, but tri-berry i could go for, i think!
