- It's over. I'm officially ending my relationship (or lack there of) with the track. Speedwork is officially being struck from my training plan. I've tried repeatedly to give it a fair chance but it's just not working out. Yes I know it makes you faster but is it worth this pain? As far as I'm concerned... not anymore. I've given it so many chances, taken it back one to many times... I do not deserve the pain and suffering it causes me. That being said I will now lace my Tempo Runs on Thursdays with Fartlek's (not to be confused with Fartnik's as I told B.o.B yesterday). I tried this last week and I did so much better than I ever have at the track. Plus there was no lingering pain after. While some of you may have a special relationship with speedwork, alas I can not say the same about our abusive relationship. I mean look at what it's done to me, behold the wonder of the Office Mullet: (Oh yes I DID!)
(Excuse the headless horsewoman that I am, I didn't have the heart to ask coworker to take another one considering the sillyness of the request to begin with...)
Saturday's Long Run calls for the second 18 miler of the training plan.... Lazy Runner has decided that we shall tackle his old stomping grounds and relive his glory days of running for UCF by hitting the campus and trails. Should be interesting with a 4am start... wonder if we'll run in to any drunkards still out and about?!?!

That is something I would totally do. I think you wear it will! :)
I didn't do speed work for my first marathon. I was more concerned with arriving at the start line injury-free than arriving at the finish line slightly faster.
Speed Kills. I would guess that more injuries happen during speed work than any other type of training run. Especially if it is done on a track (because of the curves no less). I prefer speed work to be done in a straight line.
I so yearn to be a runner someday. I'm starting a walking program the day after Labor Day so I am on my way to making my dream a reality.
A giveaway to Dicks? Where I can get the shoes I need? Oh - count me in!!
Hope your knee is better. Yikes.
Popping in from SITS to say Good Morning to ya.
You look cute in that pic, even sans noggin!
As much as I hate speedwork, I feel like it's a necessary evil.
I might break up with tempo before I break up speedwork.
I always end up "skipping" my speed work for one reason or another. I don't like it!
I feel bad for you... another run with LR!!
4am on a college campus, you should see some sights, however it is just the beginning of the school year. When I was in college in Buffalo the bars stayed open until 4!
Oooh have fun at the UCF run. That actually sounds really cool! Can't wait to read about it.
Awesome shot of you at the jobby job. Cute dress!
Fartlek, fartnik. Tomato, to-mah-to.
That really is too bad about the speedwork : (
Good luck with the long run!
I'm done with speedwork too. Rather run at my current pace than get hurt.
"headless horsewoman" hahaha TOO funny - cute dress!!
I feel ya on the speedwork - that's the exact same why I feel! Glad you made the decision that was the best for you !:)
If it abuses you leave it! LOL... adios speedwork at the track! Seriously, if it isn't fun for you don't do it. There are many other workouts to do other than speedwork. :-)
speed work is like hell. my knees arent great but i try speedwork to get faster and end up not being able to walk the whole day. FAIL. I am going to link back today with ur giveaway!
xoxo
lo
haha, I'm one of those people who has a "special" relationship with the track. But I understand the pain. Oh, I SO understand it. As long as you do some speed work/accelerations, you'll be good. There's always that one best fit for you.
Bummer about speedwork..I would think that tempos and hill training would be good for your Marathon training.
OK some people can not take a photo, but that is too too funny..
Will go check out Frayed Laces...I LOVE Brooks!!
Hugs,
Mel
Oh I blame Speedwork for all of life's evils. I don't mind Tempo too much, and I can handle a makeout session here and there with Fartlek. But hardcore track Speed? Ew, too nasty. Good for you for being woman-enough to put the smack down on that dirty ba$stard!
I have decided to try and ignore my time goal hopes (4:15? 4:00? Sub 4:00--ya right, get real dude--if only that stupid competitive voice in my head would shut up!) and just arrive at my marathon strong, injury free, and sure I can finish it at all.
PS: my word verification was "butord" which I just found funny. Call me immature; i'm used to it.
Thanks for the warm welcome, and thanks for adding me. I was wondering if anyone will actually read it lol. I'll try to keep it interesting. I'm from Kalamazoo, but I have been to Jackson a few times. It was actually my favorite cross country race in school. I'm training for the Grand Rapids Marathon, it's the week after the Chicago. Chicago was my first choice but I tend to procrastinate and missed the entry. Good timing on the speed work post, I'm just about to start adding it to my training. I kept telling myself that it wasn't that bad in high school. Surely I was being over dramatic, repeats and pyramids can't be that bad, haha. we'll see how it goes. Thanks again for the awesome welcome, I appreciate it, good luck with the knee, and the 18 miler. I've got 14 to knock out on saturday.
I broke up with the track before we even hooked up. More power to you for even trying! (Cute dress, btw. It's a good cut on you.)
I love your dress in that picture...too cute!
Sorry to hear about your break up. Hehe. The pic is hilarious. :) Oh man, totally forgot to include this in my WWR race report, but one of the team's had "Who fartleked?!?!" written on the side of their van. I cracked up EVERY time I saw it. What a great word.
Hey girl...why the track hate? You must be running them too fast or too often or not recovering from them right...they are not supposed to make you feel so pooped!
Hmmm...One day I'll have to figure it out for you so you can go back and get the loving feeling back.
In the meantime, enjoy your tempos!
Don't give up the speed work! I can honestly say its made a big difference for me. Drop it for a while..come back to it..wait until fall. But it does help..and this is from a non-speed workout for years person.
I used to do hill fartleks and loved them. I have a hilly route that I run and I would go fast up each hill. Fun!
I LOVE speed work and HATE tempo runs! Each to their own I guess!!
I will be getting a new pair of shoes soon, promise!
LOL @ Office Mullet. You gotta do what's good for you. You don't want to push yourself too hard and get injured. Cute dress, btw!
And I just decided to start my track training after this half marathon....haha
Great blog!
If you hate speed work, I say leave it!
Whaaat? That's not just a stylish new accessory? 'Cause I'm pretty sure there's an Etsy shop that sells ice packs in a variety of colors to complete the Office Mullet look.
Oh, and I'm totally the Office Mullet, I just don't have running as an excuse! :)
umm that's the point of work - to do therapy/stretch/recover from running! :) when i was back in the office/cube land i would sometimes go in an empty cube and bust out some planks in my work clothes. no shame. haha.
sorry to hear about things going south with speedwork. maybe one day he'll make it up to you and you'll want him back.
Ah yes, Mr. Speedwork. Our is a on again off again relationship. I ALWAYS have been drawn to the BAD BOYS. ;)
Oh, I LOVE speed work! Sorry to see it go!!
Enjoy the run this weekend!!
