3 Things Thursday

  1. This whole "rest" aka "xtrain only" thing I got going on this week sucks big you know what. I want to run. (Insert mean, grumpy face here.)

  2. Remember when I volunteered for the Watermelon 5k on July 4th? Well not only was it a wonderful and humbling experience but I also made a new friend. A new running friend. :) We got together last and this past Wednesday and I am so thankful she came into my life! New Runner Friend (which she shall be called until I give her a better name) is such a sweetheart and I think this is the beginning of a great friendship (and not just for running either!) YAY! We don't really run together per say (she does Galloway) but just knowing I have someone close by is comforting not to mention I have no excuse not to get up and run (not that I ever try to find one) because we have a date. A running date. With me being on mandatory rest this week I still met up with her yesterday and instead of running we just walked (briskly) and talked, she didn't mind at all that I needed to walk because of my injury, she was just glad we were out there moving!

  3. Speaking of the nagging injury, I finally bit the bullet and cashed in that referral to the Orthopedic from Dr. Knows-It-All-And-Refuses-To-Listen-To-Me for an appointment with a physical therapist. I gave her this scenario of my issues; I have dull, annoying, been running on it for so long it doesn't really bother me pain here and here and severe, I want to scream and punch babies pain here:

Long story short I most def have ITB issues, I've strained a ligament, I have severe overusage, my hips are too wide, my knees bow in, my achilles is not stretched out enough and... seriously she basically told me I was a hot mess. She gave me lots of stretches to do, new ways to use my torture device, Mr. Foam Roller, and put some electrical devices on me and did an ultrasound thingy and lots of other voo-doo that should help me on my road to recovery. She also told me I was stubborn but admired my honesty. (This was after I told her point blank if she expected me to actually rest for more than a week or two she was kidding herself... I have a marathon to run in 12 1/2 weeks!!!) Then she asked me how far a marathon was... AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Gotta love that how long is a marathon question. (Running snobery rears it's ugly head.)

So basically just keep on truckin' girl and get Mr. Foam Roller to be your best friend. But not better than me.

Stoked u got a buddy!

1) Sucks hind tit. There it's been said.

2) Aw - you guys make such a cute couple. Can I watch you...run!

Sorry about your injury. I love my relationship with the foam roller. I probably ignore him more than I should but when I do spend time with him, I fall in love!

I can't believe your PT didn't know how long a marathon is. Shouldn't that be a part of her education?

Hahaa! I've had people ask me 'so how long is your marathon this time?'

I love running buddies...especially new ones! They keep you in check since you're just getting to know them - no one ever wants to bail on an early or late run knowing someone else is waiting for them!

Hope the stretches and foam roller help :)

She did NO ask how far a marathon is. COME ON!

I have had ITB issues in the past and gotten verrrrry friendly with my goam roller.

Hope it helps! Try to be patient!

youch! But I'm glad you got to go see a PT. I went to a PT a while ago for hi pain (before I started running), and it actually really helped, doing the stretches and strengthening moves he showed me. I wish you the best of luck on your recovery! Cross training sucks for the first couple of times, but I've learned to have fun with it :)
Yay for new running buddies! I'm very excited to volunteer at the tri, but I'm shy, so hope I can find enough balls to chat ppl up!

Oh no! Sorry to hear your injury isn't getting any better!

FUN that you have a new running friend who is close to you though! That's awesome!

I know it's kind of mean, but I cringe when people ask me how long a marathon is. Not just, they don't know, but a lot of people think there are different lengths of marathons.

They all must have had terrible 7th grade social studies teachers.

From Athens to Marathon is 26.2 miles, and when that guy arrived, he said, "Nike" which means victory, and then he died.

I guarantee if you ask 7th graders, they know how long a marathon is.

WHAT?! She calls herself a PT and doesn't know how far a marathon is...definitely a bit shady if you ask me...make sure she knows you're on to her, haha.

Sorry about your ITB! It's definitely annoying to say the least but thankfully not too debilitating if you tend to it, which it seems like you're doing.

A runner friend told me once that stubborness to a non-runner is persistence to us marathoners. It's all in the eyes of the beholder!

Are you kidding me, she didn't know how far a marathon was?!?

And hooray for new running friends! They're the best :)

I've had a lot of luck with PT's fixing me up. Hope it works for you!

I always laugh when people ask that about a marathon length and guess, "Is it 10 miles? Or, 15 miles?" Even before I ran, I knew the length of a marathon.

re: the IT band issues. You also might want to go to a chiropractor. I was amazed when my chiropractor told me that I had a pinched nerve in my lower back, causing a strain on my IT band. (Speaking of which, I need to get back in there again!)
This was *after* I had already spent $4000 to have an orthopedic surgeon tell me that I have a torn meniscus in my left knee and that "nothing is wrong with your hip". Well, that's where the pain is, buddy. Doctors. Pfft.

And I was just gonna ask you when you want to go trail running? :-( I hope your ITB heals up. I've had trouble with that in the past (like back in college)... stretching it religiously helped for me.

She didn't know how long a marathon was? I am afraid of all exercise but even I know that!

from SITS :)

Good luck on the running, I hope you heal quick.

Have fun at the Chicago marathon! It's quite the event. Not that I ever ran it, but it's inconvienced me a time or two :)

O.M.G....my PT also asked how long a marathon is!!! I was like REALLY??? And then when I told her about one of my races (a 10-miler) she said, "so it's like a shorter marathon?" Um, no. Haha...I feel your pain...literally and figuratively as I also suffer from a hot mess of ITB. Grrr....

Hi Morgan,
I read a comment you posted over at Ron's blog (the PT going to do try at tri) about PT's and not getting to go to who you wanted, etc. Just FYI, you can go to any PT that you want, no matter what the script from the doctor says. Of course, you should make sure that particular PT is covered by your insurance. Your doctor can't dictate which PT you go to. Lots of PT clinics give docs script pads with their address and info, in order to steer pt's their way. The only words that matter are: "Evaluate and treat" and your doc's signature. Hope that help is helpful.
